Baa baa Black Sheep have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir three bags full
One for the master and one for the dame
One for the little boy who lives in the lane
Baa baa Black Sheep have you any wool?
Yes sir, yes sir three bags full
~Childhood nursery rhyme

It had been a while in coming, but dragons are not creatures who are hasty in their actions. She had made alliances in the past with the expectation of protection it would provide her in return for those she could also provide as well. The day her claws had been figuratively tied in an agreement made with another that put her young at risk and her voiced concerns had been turned away as if they did not count, her decision had been made. Today she was ready to implement that decision.

Dragon claws and scales, when they are young, are seldom sufficient to provide protection from those who hunt. With age scales become harder to penetrate, claws dig deeper and teeth draw blood like spears. Being natural adepts at magics, the young often play with it, and with age, it is almost as breathing for the humans who populate the cities and villages beyond the valley.

Dragons tend to like keeping to themselves and out of sight of humans. The little simians are, after all, quite annoying with their spears and arrows and unreasonable need to hunt for sport anything that is not of their kind. From time to time, however, a few do like to move among the other races, taking on the appearance of humans and elves. This affords the chance to learn and know of Others. There were two who were now ready and willing to move among Others, and so a new agreement was ready to be made.

So now, here she sat writing a letter. Within the letter was a documentation of the reasons for separation from the alliance. The pin which had been the symbol of the agreement was set upon the table beside the envelope. She carefully folded the letter and placed it with the pin within the envelope. Once her seal was upon it, she gazed into the mirror before her.

Mirrors could be such peculiar things. For most they reflected only the image of what was before it. For some, they revealed doorways to other worlds. For her, at this moment, they could be a window to another place. She had only to concentrate upon the mirror and desire to see a place she had visited at least once before. This time, it was a particular room with a particular desk. Once she had found what she was seeking, she simply slipped the envelop with letter and pin through the mirror to then see it laid upon the desk. It would be found and her alliance would be formally dissolved. Her task was complete.

It was now time to prepare for a journey and new alliances to be forged.

“Silence.” It was strange how chaotic it could be when so many had so much to say in so little time. The dragons present at the counsel were usually not so quick to speak over each other. That, after all was considered a human failing. However, considering how little time they were going to have to put forward everything to be negotiated, perhaps it should be forgiven this time.

Once she had their attention and silence, she nodded to the representative for the Brass Dragon Host at this meeting, “Now, what were you saying before being interrupted.” A scowl was given to the Bronze where he lay curled in the corner, tail tip flicking.

In an ever-so-important-and-proper fashion, the Brass cleared his throat before speaking, “I was saying that we need to be sure to seek a means of replenishing the forests of the Valley with game to hunt. Our young need to have small game to learn to hunt as well as larger beasts for true hunts.”

Maerissa nodded noting each request to be placed on the list. From access to gems and jewels for a proper dragon horde to land passage and hunting rights, they were each noted. Even the request for official passage into human and elf towns and cities by the representatives of the Gold and Silver Dragon Hosts was noted. This, of course drew protests from the Copper Dragon Host representative, yet seemed fair enough to add to the list of negotiation terms.

Once the list of items for benefits to the dragons had been laid out and discussed, Maerissa moved to the harder terms. “We need to decide what we are willing to put on the table to offer for these agreements.” To this, she got the expected result. The Copper Dragon Host representative sneered and growled. She never liked to give over anything, as was typical of her kind. She did, however, know Maerissa well enough to know that there would be no agreement put forth that wasn’t balanced and none accepted that didn’t benefit all parties.

So began the more difficult determination of concessions each of the Hosts were willing to make in order to make the agreement not just a possibility but a reality.

Three days in the meetings with the dragon conclave, and two more days and nights in private meetings, a day to pack her supplies and send them ahead of her toward her final destination and Maerissa was finally ready to begin her trip. To give the beasts in the small caravan a chance to reach Gharnholme ahead of her, she had decided that she would take a small side trip.

She had kept a watchful eye on her daughter as the girl grew into a young woman. However, watching from a distance was never the same as being there and observing her closely and personally. Over time, the young woman had aged and sixteen years after Maerissa had first left her at the door of the young couple, was about to take an apprenticeship as a seamstress for an elderly woman who had agreed to train her.

Lynarion, like most young women, had her share of suitors, with one in particular, who seemed to have won the young woman’s fancy. It was this that concerned Maerissa most. It was not unheard of for dragons to take an infatuation with a mortal, even a human, lover. Humans could be such a curious species. Both wise and foolish, giving and selfish, they were often a source of great contradictions all rolled up into flesh. However, in no more than five years, Maerissa’s spell over her daughter would give sway and Lynarion would return to her own kind to take a mate. It was this, and the young man who had become enamored of her daughter, which concerned Maerissa most.

So it was that Maerissa now prepared to take a journey to more closely determine what if anything needed or could be done.
