Elessaria slipped silently from Tass and Kitty's manor after passing the first dreamless night of sleep since her return from Evandar. She had penned a quick note of thanks for the much needed sanctuary they had provided before she departed feeling a bit more grounded and at ease. A night of too much whiskey on top of a heart that weighed heavily was too much for the empath to bear in the solitude of her own home. Michael's work kept him out many nights, through no fault of his own; but, after the brutal killing of her peahen, Eless did not wish to stay there alone.

The merriment of the Beltane festivities had done much to restore her empathy; yet her true magical gifts remained depleted from the emotional and intricate workings she had completed to help heal her homeland-- even time with Tass, which usually healed her, had not succeeded. A thought... a sense... something intangible pricked at her subconscious and Eless simply attributed it to the current season. The chaotic storm of emotions that swept through RhyDin every Spring only seemed to continue to keep her off balance and it was a constant struggle to keep from drowning beneath the surging sentiments. Lurking underneath it all was the steadily growing fear of abandonment that gnawed endlessly at her tender heart. And when she saw Kendall the other night in the Inn, Michael's words flew back to haunt her, the trepidation increasing. It was a genuine fear that plagued a sensitive young woman whom many believed to have it all.

Caught up in her thoughts, Elessaria's wanderings were not as aimless as she had originally thought. The telltale shards of marble that hid within the weeds signalled to her barefeet first that she had arrived in the ruins of Asheby Manor, her former home here in RhyDin. Only a few weeks ago she had paid her respects to her family and her people who had perished in order for her to live. Now it was time for her to visit another grave. She could feel her heart tighten in her chest when her eyes found the rose granite marker, but before she knelt upon the well tended resting place of her unborn daughter, she took the time to gather a gift of early Spring flowers. Her fingers trembled as she threaded her way through the weeds and brambles that now made up what had been the glorious gardens, plucking a few stray blooms of fragrant freesia, lilies of the valley and some wild violets.

The morning's dew was damp against the bare skin of her knees, and she tossed her shoes to one side as she reverently placed the tiny bouquet against the cold stone. Eless brushed away a few of the dried leaves that had been discarded by the wind; they crumpled noisily with her dismissal. She sat back on her heels with a delicate finger tracing the name etched against the rose background, tears filling her eyes of blue flame. The diminutive elfess dipped forward at the waist to press her soft lips against the chilled, smooth surface and closed her eyes against the shower of tears. A slight shift moved her forehead to rest next to the carved angel and she gave in to the grief that flooded through her petite form.

Dark clouds filled the skies above and the wind began to kick up, once more rearranging autumn leaves to suit Mother Nature. Heedless of the cold rain that had started to drip steadily down, Elessaria kept her eyes closed. Words of prayers and petition were lost amidst muffled mews of sorrow and her tears drenched her as equally as the rains. A sudden streak of lightening tore against the darkened sky, followed quickly by a thunderous clap that somehow managed to reach through to her senses. She floundered against the heavy sadness to raise her head and brush away the hot tears that clung to her pale features. Dimly she registered the all too familiar metallic tang of blood and the crimson stains upon her shaking palms. Another sharp crack of the brewing tempest was timed perfectly with a severe, sudden pain in her head and The Lady Fire of Evandar was plunged into darkness.

~Can you help me out?
Can you let me a hand?
It's safe to say that
I'm stuck again

Trapped between this life and the light
I just can't figure out
How to make it right

A thousand times before
I've wondered if there's something more
Something more...

I feel it's gonna rain like this for days
So let it rain down and wash everything away
I hope that tomorrow the sun will shine
With every tomorrow comes another life

I feel it's gonna rain
For days and days
I feel it's gonna rain

I tried to figure out
I can understand
What it means to live on again

Trapped between the truth and the consequence
Nothings real
Nothings making sense~ Lyrics from Rain by Creed.

The sharp, stabbing pain is what brought Elessaria back to consciousness and the darkness was almost welcomed for bright light would most likely only worsen it. She squinted in an attempt to discern her surroundings, but nothing was visible to provide any sort of reference for her to determine her location. The flimsy silk of her dress clung damply to her chilled skin with a mixture of blood and rain, her bodice dagger no longer hidden upon her person. Delicate hands quickly flitted over her body to assess the damage, stopping at the tender, swollen lump that pushed through her soaked hair at the back of her head and she winced, remaining partly prone on the cold floor. "Ow," she hissed through clenched teeth.

The petite elf despised the dark for many reasons, including her nightblindness, so even though her magic had been erratic since the visit to Evandar, she invoked the simple spell to call forth light which almost any low level mage could do. When no orb of blue light formed to illuminate the inky black that surrounded Eless, she frowned and concentrated harder. "Please...please...do nay fail me now," she entreated while she she cast an easier spell that would call forth a signature blue flame to the tip of her slender fingers. She slapped a bruised palm to the hard surface of the floor with a mumbled curse of frustration only to hear the sibilant tones of a low, throaty chuckle from a short distance away.

The shadows seemed to shift and swirl; she had never realized there could be so many shades of black and grey, yet the source of the mocking laughter was still not visible. The faint scent, reminiscent of cloves stirred up a long forgotten memory and set her nose to crinkle with marked distaste. Eless surged up to stand and instinctively reached to draw an available mana to her, the blue flames flaring vividly in her eyes as she hissed again, this time in anger. "Ah-ah-ah, Elessaria," he tsked in warning to the elven mage. A scorching flame burned through her when she went to cast the spell and she fumbled, dropping to her knees with head bowed from the searing pain.

"By all that is Light, I will make thee suffer!" she ground out her impotent curse.

Smug, the darker patch of black that hovered just out reach retorted lightly, "I took care to make certain thou couldest not, My Little One." As the burning faded, an odd mix of cold and heat encircled her neck and Elessaria reached up to tug futilely at the enchanted torque that blocked her gifts so adeptly. "All grown up now and still wearing my mark," he crooned. It was then she felt his gloved hand trace the silver scar that marred the slender, alabaster column of her neck. Another flash of her temper and she recoiled with a shove at his large hand, her stomach lurching. "Come now...as lovely and fragile as those freesia blossoms thou dost favor if we clean thee up."

Her entire body quavered, but she could only respond with another hiss for fear of losing the contents of her stomach if she spoke more. She scuttled backward to free herself from his petting of her blood streaked cheek. He sighed at her reaction and chided her, "When wilt thou realize thou art mine?"

"Never!" She spat out, refusing to let the tremors be reflected in her voice, and vehemence radiated from her aura in thick waves.

"Very well then. I see thou art in need of another reminder. I hope thou wilt wear it just as proudly, Lady Fire of Evandar." A silent gesture motioned to unseen guards and he melted back into the shadows.

Rough hands pushed her brusquely back onto her knees. Ragged nails caked with filth tore away the delicate silk of her dress while she kicked out and clawed blindly at her captors. The cracking of a leather whip, laced with magically tainted slivers of metal ceased her struggle. A feral cry of pain ripped through her as it scored her sensitve skin of her back. Eless fell forward with tears, only partly surprised that she had any left yet to shed. On hands and knees she bore the sharp lashes the taint metal searing her more deeply than the flaying of the leather. She refused the urge to curl up into the fetal position. She would not gift them with her defeat. She bit at her lip until she tasted blood to hold back the cries, but whimpers still escaped with each strike. Somewhere amidst the fading scope of her consciousness, the empath knew she had to rein in her suffering and her emotions or any with whom she was connected would bear witness to this assault.

Few knew the cost of using her magical gifts; Fewer still were aware of the connection she maintained with those whom she had healed or touched in a magical or empathic way. During the process their true natures had been revealed to Eless and their secrets were to be guarded to her grave. She maintained a constant vigilance to ensure that those with whom she was forever linked would not receive any stray emotions in return. It took all of her skill and her strength of will to keep the torturous pain from bleeding back out to the innocents. This was her duty: to protect the innocent and to serve the Light. But, oh...how far had she fallen.

When her trembling body could no longer endure the brutal kiss of the whip whose tendrils even licked around her sides to score her delicate feminine curves , her mind stepped in and submerged her into a more welcomed oblivion.

~And when I feel helpless
There's always a hope that shines through
And makes me believe
And makes me believe

And I see for one fleeting moment
A paradise under the sun
I drift away
And I make my way back to you

You gave me faith
And you gave me a world to believe in
You gave me a love to believe in
And feeling this love
I can rise up above
And be strong
And be strong, and be whole once again ~ Lyrics from A World To Believe In - C. Dion.

The steady thrum of the early spring rain upon rent flesh roused Eless. It seemed her captor had released her from her imprisonment amidst the Veils that separated the worlds, only to have dumped her unceremoniously upon the grave back at Asheby Manor. She managed a wry chuckle at his macabre sense of humour, but simply stayed prone for some moments and stared blankly up at the cloud-filled sky. How much time had passed during her ordeal? There were no answers to be found up above. She knew she had to move, to return home and to tend the wounds. They were already beginning to fester and she felt the fever deep within her bones.

Her groan echoed faintly throughout the ruins when she gingerly pulled herself upright, a tiny hand braced against the headstone for support until she knew she would not tumble. The elven empath dragged shaking fingers through the tangled mess of her hair and sighed deeply. Somehow she needed to sneak home, clean up and soak in a hot bath filled with copious amounts of medicinal bath salts. Eless arranged the fall of her hair to drape over the tattered remnants of her dress the best she could. She would give a month's worth of new gowns for even a coarse linen cloak at the moment. Another pained sigh escaped her pale lips and clinging to the shadows, she limped her way home.
