"Here Maya, turn 'round an' I'll fix it fer ya." The young woman playing Clara smiled gratefully and turned so Katarina could straighten the large bow in her hair. Backstage seemed just as chaotic as every other show, though some would say the addition of children managed to raise the noise level.

Katarina was unusually quiet and calm. Part of this reason was due to role, not being in the first act of the ballet. Still, her demeanor was contemplative as she continued to think about The Royal Academy. She could only hope that the thought would leave her be when she needed to perform.

To take her mind off of things, she moved around and tried to help where she could, whether it was entertaining the children or grabbing last minute items before they were forgotten.

Away from the backstage, the theatre appeared as elegant as ever. Candles of varying sizes brought illumination inside the theatre and down the aisles. Ushers in simple black and white tuxedos appeared polished and patient, waiting for the doors to open and guide people to their seats. The walls and ceiling were made of both dark wood and light marble; designs both simple and bold that naturally drew the viewer’s eyes to the stage.

The lobby was already filled with early guests who anticipated the several grand doors to open. Posters of the play were displayed on the walls next to large candles, and different themes and props were cleverly collaborated to give subtle clues to those that did not know the story. The colors reflected a winter wonderland with whites, silvers and blues. There was even a corner dedicated to entertaining children with snow that was bewitched to keep falling without building a mound. Holiday drinks and candy were occasionally brought out for anyone's enjoyment.

The exterior of the theatre was bright and alive. Set aglow to set a dramatic ambience, posters were displayed, and some stamped with “sold-out.” Few cast members where dressed as life-sized toys to go and entertain the guests.

Paia Koazluria bri Ruq was sold on the show as soon as she found out that they had a cloakroom. The moment she saw that a smiling attendant would be happy, no, really, charmed to take her heavy fur stole, she knew that the night could not go far wrong.

"Oh, how cha~arming!" She could barely control herself as she flitted around the different props and displays, unable to resist the urge to reach and touch them.

"This is fantastic. Oh, my goodness, this is truly fantastic. Wait, what's that! Infinitely falling snow? What a trick!" She then launched herself towards the children's snow pit to frolic with the 6-year-olds, overjoyed beyond belief. Only somebody offering her a glass of eggnog pried her out. As soon as her husband walked in, though, she returned to her ordinary gravitas.

"If this is just the introduction, I can't wait to see the show."

It had been some time since he had been to a show - especially something along these lines. It was a holiday production of a fantasy fairy-tale - or so he had been informed when a client had given him free tickets. He smirked slightly as he watched the crowd push slowly through the door. He stepped out of the carriage, his arms folding behind him. Adorning his shoulders was a black and red cape for formal occasions. The dark chill in the air was "relaxed", blending in with the air of the night. He rolled his head to the side slightly, causing it to crack and pop once or twice.

He took a step to the sidewalk. Behind him the rustling of Katerrina caused him to turn and he offered his hand to her. The dark auburn eyes studied his apprentice a moment in her graceful gown. Like he, she carried no weapons, no tools. The gentle murmer of the crowd covered the sound of her foot touching down upon the sidewalk. She returned a small smile to him as she took his hand. He walked forward, but did not get far before lani stepped out of the transport and followed behind the two of them. Her formal uniform holding tight to her body, the silver band around her neck cleaned and polished as if it were new. In one hand was the ticket.

As he approached the door and was asked for the ticket, his free hand reached back to take it and hand it back to the doorman. "I am assuming we have a few minutes before the performance begins?" The doorman nodded and handed back the ticket. "Excellent. Come, my dear." He said as he waited for another man to pull the glass door of the theater open. He pulled Katerrina behind him as lani followed dilligently behind.

It was going to be a great night for a show.

Elessaria entered the theater with a nod of thanks to the gentleman who held the door open for her. The carefully crafted illumination and decor for the peformance immediately captivated the diminutive elf. She threaded her way amongst the ever growing crowd of attendees to admire each tableau, her eyes sparkling with the same enthusiasm as a child's on festival day. After taking one of the proferred drinks, she stood somewhat patiently along the sidelines and searched the gathering for any familiar faces. The empath smiled as the increasing excitement of the guests and performers thrummed gently against her shields and she enjoyed the change in mood while she sipped, absently fidgeting with the plum silk of her gown.

"I'm wearing makeup," Val growled through clenched teeth.

"Yeah," Lirssa nodded with a smile, "so are all the performers. Something about the lights. Besides, you were awful pale. You don't wanna be all sickly looking. Folks 'ill think you got the plague."

She was trying her best to keep the children in line away from anything that might mess up their costumes, not picking at their makeup or their hair, or getting in anyone's way. For the first time in her life she could understand the phrase "herding cats."

Her own dress was a deep blue velvet with satin trim. It had the empire waist cut and long satin sleeves out of puffed velvet shoulders. The skirt went straight and full to end just at her ankles. It was, in truth, her first grown up style dress. She was entirely self conscious of the fact she could not run, climb, or do any of her acrobatics in it.

However, she did not want to focus on that now, but kept the younger children's attention with small, quiet games that involved what they were supposed to do when out on stage. It kept them all from being too nervous.

Well, almost all of them. Jess was constantly covering her mouth with her hands and mumbling that she was going to vomit all over her dress. When Lirssa had made sure the girl was not actually sick, touching her forehead, looking into her eyes, and smelling her breath, she had taken to holding the girl close and assuring her there was nothing to be afraid of out there. It was all a game like they played in the back yard of High Spires House.

The anxious looks of the adults were given assured thumbs up and big smiles. There was no way any of the children in her care were going to ruin this event. Lirssa would see them to rights in the end, even if it meant holding Jess's hand the entire way.

Eva just knew that she was going to be the only person not going to the opening night of The Nutcracker. She sighed as she climbed the back stairs to the inn. Why was it that she always seemed to want what she couldn't have?

Maybe she could have afforded to buy herself a ticket. That wasn't the problem. The problem was the dress. How could she justify buying herself a new evening dress when she couldn't yet afford to buy herself a hat, scarf and gloves for winter. It was snowing already, for chrissakes!

Before the fire that destroyed her apartment, Eva had a perfectly acceptable evening dress, even if it had been a year old. Now she didn't have much of anything. She had to buy everything new, and it was amazing how quickly toothpaste and underwear could add up. Even with the salary advance Rhys had given her, she'd run through it pretty quick buying just the essentials.

When Mason had asked her the night before, in that joking way of his, if she was a fan of the arts, a part of her wanted to shout 'yes!' She didn't know exactly why, but she just felt that music, dance, and art made the world a little bit more beautiful. And though she didn't understand it, she knew how it made her feel. Like the world wasn't quite so dark.

At the top of the stairs Eva stopped short. A poster announcing the opening night had been tacked to the door leading to the inn's rooms. She sighed. There wasn't going to be a ballet for her. She would just have to sit and wait for everyone to get back to hear how they liked it. Damned fire.

Taking a step into the lobby she met the ticket man's gaze and gave him a warm smile.

"Ticket?" he asked holding out his hand. Lilith nodded and pulled the ticket from her pocket placing it in his hand. The man's gaze ran up and down the ticket once or twice before he handed it back "have a nice night" he said giving her a nod as Lilith walked in.

Standing in the lobby Lilith gave a few nods to the people who she recognized and a warm smile to those she didn't.
She was looking forward to this evening, especially listening to the music, and watching the performance.

She hadn't intended to go, but at the last minute she had changed her mind and turned up in a somewhat, stylish black ankle length dress, with black heels.

It was all she could afford after spending most of her money on the ticket, and although it wasn't new and beautiful like a lot of the other woman she had seen, but it did the job for the night.

Fiddling with a strand of her hair that had somehow curled a little since she had left her room at the inn she sighed and smiled to herself.
Somehow she wished she had someone to go with, but she knew she would be able to take The Nutcracker and its scenes in more by herself, with no one to distract her.

Blushing a little as a man gave her an interesting gaze she turned and noticed the breeze picking up outside and instantly praised herself for getting to the theatre a little earlier than she had planned.

Taking one of the drinks that were being carried around she sipped it slowly, wanting to make it last. Noticing a familiar face she made her way over to Elessaria and began a conversation, hoping to pass the time as well as stand with someone she knew and not look like a fool with nothing to do.

*Look at how tall the tree is, mom!* Avery craned his neck and pointed to the tree outside of the theatre. To keep warm from the light snow, he had his brown cloak that was just a shy from touching the ground to cover his nice sweater and breeches.

"It is very tall." Storm smiled down at Avery before glancing up as well, "How do you think they get the decorations up to the very top?"

He seemed to greatly think the matter over, before giving her a hopeful look, *Did you come and fly them up there?*

Laughing lightly, she gently pulled on the hand that remained in hers, "No little one, I did not. Though I am sure they could have used something to the same effect." It warmed Storm's heart to see her son bright-eyed and excited for their "special" outing. With Kellan under the watchful eye of the caretaker, Storm had promised Avery and evening with just the two of them. And while there was a small ache for the absence of her husband, she put her energy into making sure Avery could enjoy an evening away from the house.

Once making it to the lobby after trying to play with actors dressed up as dolls and toys, Avery immediately beelined for the falling snow. *How is it snowing inside?* However he didn't wait for an answer and instead went to stand inside of it along with other children.

Watching him play, Storm pulled back her cloak to reveal a simple floor length maroon dress. She recognized a few patrons from her previous experience at the theatre, and more of her friends coming to watch. She exchanged polite and warm greetings with them, before catching Avery's eyes and absently holding out her hand, "Let us go find our seats, shall we?"

Jolyon had promised to attend, and being something of a patron of the arts in his home world, he had intended to do so anyway. Point of fact, he had not missed an opening night of the ballet or opera since his arrival to Rhydin. This night was no exception.

The double-breasted swallowtail coat with silk-faced lapels and closed skirt front was of a dark green in concert with the pressed black trousers and high shined black boots. The cravat set off the white linen shirt beneath, and he had simple cuff links. All of this revealed when he removed the long overcoat and the black top hat to the coat check.

A smile traced a wary path over his mouth when he looked around the lobby, but he did not linger there. With his box seat calling, and he wondered if he would be intruding on the other ticket holders of the box, he thought to make his arrival first to set things easy.

He was fortunate to find his box currently empty. He selected one of the two seats in the back, leaving the front two for any possible ladies of the other party to choose, and took his ease, ready for the night's entertainment.

Ushers finally encouraged everyone to find their seats, handing out programs that listed every member of the troupe, musician, and High Spires House child. Each program held a brief synopsis of the wordless acts.

Act I

The work opens with a brief "Miniature Overture", which also opens the Suite. The music sets the fairy mood by using upper registers of the orchestra exclusively. The curtain opens to reveal the Stahlbaums' house, where a Christmas Eve party is under way. Clara, her little brother Fritz, and their mother and father are celebrating with friends and family, when the mysterious godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer, enters. He quickly produces a large bag of gifts for all the children. All are very happy, except for Clara, who has yet to be presented a gift. Herr Drosselmeyer then produces three life-size dolls, which each take a turn to dance. When the dances are done, Clara approaches Herr Drosselmeyer asking for her gift. It would seem that he is out of presents, and Clara runs to her mother in a fit of tears and disappointment.

Drosselmeyer then produces a toy Nutcracker, in the traditional shape of a soldier in full parade uniform. Clara is overjoyed, but her brother Fritz is jealous, and breaks the Nutcracker.

The party ends and the Stahlbaum family go to bed. While everybody is sleeping, Herr Drosselmeyer repairs the Nutcracker. Then Clara wakes up and sees her window open. When the clock strikes midnight, Clara hears the sound of mice. She wakes up and tries to run away, but the mice stop her. The Nutcracker comes to life, he and his band of soldiers rise to defend Clara, and the Mouse King leads his mice into battle.

A conflict ensues, and when Clara helps the Nutcracker by holding the Mouse King by the tail or throwing her shoe at the Mouse King, the Nutcracker seizes his opportunity and stabs him. The mouse dies. The mice retreat, taking their dead leader with them. The Nutcracker is then transformed into a prince.

Clara and the Prince travel to a world where dancing Snowflakes greet them and fairies and queens dance, welcoming Clara and the Prince into their world. The score conveys the wondrous images by introducing a wordless children's chorus

Katarina enjoyed the first act from her chair carefully hidden backstage. Nearly complete in her costume, it was a rare treat to be able to sit and enjoy such a large portion of the ballet. The opening scene was one of her favorites, the warm setting of friends and family reminding her of holidays on Hope.

When the end of Act I finished, the curtains came down and the candles were brought back to life. A small intermission would give the viewers a few minutes to stretch their legs and grab a snack before continuing the Nutcracker story.

The announcement by the ushers that the performance was about to start got he and his companions motivated to find the booth. They could still hear the last few practice and warm up chords performed by the orchestra. He smirked slightly as lani withdrew the cloak from over his shoulders revealing a black uniform with silver highlights. The utility belt that normally adorned his form was missing, but the air of danger was still there, the dark chill playing with the flesh of lani’s form only made the girl smile. Katerrina had her shawl removed, revealing a blood red dress and black highlights. She smiled as she sat next to him in the chair while lani knelt to his left. His free hand extended, draped over the girl’s head as he played with her hair – almost in beat to the music as the performance became alive.

The dancers moving across the stage were graceful, the artwork simple as the combined elements began to tell the holiday story. He chuckled when needed, otherwise remained quiet. The performance was not what he was used to, but it was well done, well acted, and the music was appropriate. Upon the closing of the first act, he retracted his hand from the girl’s head and clapped as he watched from the box seats.

Bryce fidgeted in his seat in the box overlooking the stage. He was pretty sure that inviting the mysterious backers to the ballet had been a less than brilliant move on his part. That opinion was confirmed when Travanix and his entourage joined him in the box just before the curtain went up.

Ceila the receptionist reached over and patted his hand comfortingly during the opening, leaning in to whisper in his ear. "Relax boss. Just watch the show and leave business for another night."

Surprisingly enough he found himself relaxing as the performance went on, only giving occasional glances at the trio across from them.

The dark suit he wore and the dimness of the lighting in the audience once the ballet had started made Locke's late entrance about as stealthy as possible. The orchestra also covered for him, leaving the ice elf's murmured apologies and the shuffling of those who had to move and stand to let him sit down only audible to those nearby. Locke set his black messenger bag and a festive red paper bag at the foot of his chair, before finally easing into a seated position. He looked up and smiled faintly to himself, noting that the dancing itself had yet to begin. Late, but still on time. While the suite played, Locke took the time to scan through the program, recognizing a few more of the dancers by name then he had months ago, when he'd first seen the ballet in action.

The curtain opened, and he set aside the playbill to give full attention to the action on stage. When the curtains came down for the intermission, Locke watched as most of the people around him stood, heading for the lobby to mix and mingle, or step outside to smoke. He remained in his seat, however. He was still feeling a little fatigued from his all-out dash to the theatre several minutes earlier. He fidgeted with the bottom button on his three-button suit, then the silver snowflake cuff links anchoring the cuffs of his white dress shirt. After one last careful tug and readjustment of the patterned navy blue tie around his neck, he settled back in to wait for the show to start up again.

Viewers were ushered back into their seats in order to begin the second act of the ballet.

Act II

Clara and the Prince arrive at the Land of the Sugar Plum Fairy. The Sugar Plum Fairy and the people of the Land of Sweets dance for Clara and the Prince in the dances of Dew Drop Fairy, the Spanish dancers, the Chinese dancers, the Arabian dancers, the Russian dancers, Mother Ginger and her Polichinelles,, the Reed Flutes, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Waltz of the Flowers.

After the festivities, Clara wakes up under the Christmas tree with the Nutcracker toy in her arms and the curtain closes.

While the playbills said little about the final act, the dancers needed no words to express the cheerful scene. Each new group of dancers brought a different style of dance, theme, and music. Katarina and Andy were the last dancers of the dream to perform, they moved like one had did a series of impressing lifts and spins. Still in they end, they graciously applauded Maya and Bryan, who deserved the ending bow.

All the candles were brought back to life, and guests were offered to participate in the Winter Wonderland instead of the usual after party.

Such a delightful little scene at the end - Love conquers all. It was almost enough to make him vomet in his seat. However, he did not have to pay for the tickets. He showed his appreciation by applauding, but it was not vigerous nor was it energetic.

As it ended instead of joining the others, he stood from his chair. No need to communicate words, lani knew him well enough that she was already working on retrieving his cloak and applying it to his shoulders. She quickly repeated the process for Katerrina who also seemed let down by the ending.

"It is the curse of the winter season, hope and the other garbage that comes with it." He said as he took Katerrina's hand and began to escort her from the booth. "A waste of energy."
