She was busy.

Her whole life has been spent on the stage. If a ballet wasn't in motion or in progress, life was simple but boring. Ballet stole energy but it also created it. It sparked creativity and life to create a pleasant harmony for Katarina.

This wasn't anything like that.

The Living Pictures project was well underway, and every available actor, dancer and singer of the theatre was helping in anyway. Makeup artists needed to test their latest rendering, rehearsals needed to be scheduled which meant people needed to be contacted, and most of all props needed to be made. Even though eventually the backdrops would look near identical to famous paintings, if the paint strokes were broad then Katarina was painting it. Many times she looked across the way to Andy and he wore the same tired expression.

One of the major directors, Syd was usually out delegating work or in his office. He was also the biggest person Katarina had ever seen. It at least helped the long days go by when she could watch him from under her lashes, and the little blonde Kazzy catering to his commands and needs.

"Katarina?" The Count, who now remained in his office most days, peeked his head out to the theatre to see the prima ballerina painting the same green background for the third time, "Can you grab Alik and Andy and meet in my office, please?" Not expecting any objection, he returned back to his office.

Sighing, she still set her things aside so that she could find her male companions. Even though she still refused to say much to Alik, she would rather deal with him and the Count together than paint anymore. Andy nearly jumped out of his corner of costuming to join her. Alik was more difficult to find. Katarina was never quite sure where he went, not that she kept track anyway.

Once the three of them were in Christophe's office, Katarina sat down in the large chairs and nearly sighed. All the bending and painting was beginning to strain her back.

The Count was quick to get straight to the point, "The Ballet Troupe needs to put on a production. We have been too quiet over the past few months."

Andy's frown could be heard in his voice, "I don't think that's going to work out well, with all of us working so hard on Living Pictures."

"And that is why not everyone is going to do it, at least not until the end. I was thinking of something that justs features the three of you."

Katarina didn't hide a sneak glance over to Alik. The last time she did a smaller production, it did not end well, "Wha'cha hav' 'n min'?"

The Count chose to ignore Katarina's obvious distrust, "I was thinking Petrushka, with Alik as Petrushka and Andy as the Moor."

"You want me as Petrushka?" There was a hint of unusual surprise in Alik's voice. Usually he seemed to always be under the shadows of the Count, never surprised by his next move and never in the spotlight.

"I think it is time that we premiered Alik as one of our main dancers. And Andy and Katarina dance so well together, I think this will be a perfect combination. You will abandon most of your duties to Living Pictures by the end of the week, and will start with Madame then."

A sigh of mixed relief, Katarina didn't linger, "As ya say, boss." A slight shiver ran down her spine when she felt eyes on her back and knew that it wasn't from the Count's direction.

"So, what do you think about it?" Andy held the flyer away from his body as though it carried a disease. It was the quiet - or not so quiet - gossip that was reaching more that just the small ensemble of the ballet troupe.

"So, wha'?" Katarina gave her shoulder a single shrug and continued the slow, long movements of her limbs, "Li'l competition didn' hur' nobody. 'Sides, dun thin' they're gonna hav' 'nough people ta star' a troupe. Thinkin' it's gonna me more o' a actin' thin', righ'?"

"Performing arts even remotely similar will compete. And another theatre means that eventually they'll be more groups. Bet the opera will be the first to feel it." Andy nodded his head as if to confirm his beliefs, before crumpling the Shanachie Theatre Company auditions flyer and tossing it into the nearest trash bin. His action seemed to be noticed by many, and tension floated around the halls in whispers.

Katarina laughed and rolled her eyes, "Yer gettin' all crazy-like. Ain' gonna be bad. Maybe we kin even work 'n somethin' together." When his eyes bulged, she snickered, "Quit worryin'. We go' th' bes' tha' 'round 'ready. Nah like we're gonna star' dancin' somethin' else jist 'cause it's showin' up 'n th' otha side o' town."

A flash of metal had Katarina looking over to the silent Alik as he also went through his warm-ups. Her avoidance over the past year had minimized most of her anger. Not all, but most. His silence was nothing unusual.

Andy however, was still shaking his head, "I don't know Rini, I have a bad feeling about this."

"Maybe we should audition, an' git a look-see a' wha' kinda people ar' showin' up. Nah like our faces 'n gonna be shown 'n th' posters comin' ou' soon. Maybe we could be all sneaky-like."

When Andy realized that her grin was sincere, he shook his head and laughed, "You're some kind of crazy. Someone will know."

"Be kinda fun all th' same. We should go make nice. Like adults." After a pause and glance, they laughed and helped to relax the tense air around the theatre.

"Yanno, it always seems like we've go' people we dunno watchin' durin' this time o' year." It was late, and Katarina rubbed the back of her neck as she glanced through the heavy curtains backstage and out towards the seats. Naturally the handful of shadowed people that had been watching the practice were gone. Two years ago it was the Royal Academy. Now, she could look back and smile as her decision contributed to the happy life she held now. Back then, it made her a nervous wreck.

"Think it might be from the new performing group? I heard they're doing Nutcracker. Maybe they'll looking to outdo our show." Andy also glanced over Katarina's shoulder to no avail.

"It's nah gonna be as good as ours. An' nah, I dun thin' it was them. I dun thin' they'd be all secretive-like." Katarina stretched out her warmed muscles and rolled her neck slowly, "Maybe ya go' some scouters, Andy."

He grunted as a laugh, but Alik, hidden in the shadows, spoke up, "They are scouters. I am sure of it."

"Yeah? An' wha' makes ya so sure?" Doubt laced in Katarina's tone, and she almost hmphed.

Alik started to walk by and paused when he reached them, "I heard Christophe inviting them to watch." He left the remaining dancers backstage as he continued on his silent walk.

Andy opened his mouth, closed it, and opened it again, "Scouters - for what? Who is he trying to get of?"

"Dun worry 'bout it, yeah? If I kin get by wit' scouters, then so kin ya. Sides, ya go' a contract. Dun sweat th' li'l thin's." A stack of papers were waiting on any otherwise empty table, and she took the stack and gave half to him, "Now, han' these ou'. Let's remind RhyDin why we're th' on' an' only ballet troupe, yeah?"

"Don't you think it is a little curious, putting out our ballet before their show?" Andy helped to hold down the poster so that Katarina could tape down the corners.

"Nah, we've been workin' 'n this way longa, yeah? 'Sides, nothin' like a li'l competition ta git th' bes' ou' o' everyone, yeah?" In truth, she did feel a little bad about competing so closely with the new performing group, but she would never admit to the small piece of her that found the thrill in it. "We'll go ova ta their show openin' nigh', an' be all polite-like. We kin jist blame th' timin' 'n th' Count anyhow. He's th' one's tha' makes all the choices 'round here. He tells us ta spin an' we say 'how long'?" The disdain in her voice was evident.

Andy sighed deeply, and looked across the Marketplace to see Alik working on putting up posters alone, "Do you think he was right? About the scouts, that is."

"I dunno. He is 'round th' Count all th' time. An' despite my dislikin' fer 'im, he's usually been pretty hones'." In fact, Katarina felt little about the interaction between her and Alik last year. It wasn't worth her continuous anger so long as he was always around. Her life was happy, regardless if he had to be in it or not. "I jist dunno who'd it be fer. We're pretty set 'n dancers, yeah? Maybe they'll make their way ta th' new group, see wha' kinda people they kin fin' and steal there." A pause in her walk, Katarina grinned and pointed to a window, "Let's do one there."

Following obediently, Andy pulled another poster from the pile to place it square on the window, "I don't know. Last time people came from you. We have three male leads. Unless we expand and start performing different shows with different dancers each week, I can't see how someone isn't going to leave."

"We'll talk ta Madame, an' a' wors', th' Count." Katarina put the tape on the corners, and then waved inside to her cousin after taping the outside of Expressions of Hope. "Nothin' we kin do bu' wait."

The grin had yet to leave Katarina's face since yesterday. Even now as she was called in early for a surprise meeting to the theatre, she was practically laughing down the halls. People looked confused as she walked by, but all she did was flash a smile and continue on. When she finally made it to the meeting room, the conversation started without her.

"I think that we will need to put out our schedule in advance as they do." Christophe drummed his fingers against the small stack of papers next to him. Bryan, Andy, Christine and Madame were all watching him with weary eyes.

"G'mornin'!" Katarina interrupted without pause and moved to the empty chair that was obviously hers, "Didn' realize I was comin' late. Sorry."

The Count watched her cheery expression and his eyes narrowed, "Have you seen their posters?"

"Course I hav'. Catchy ain' it?" Katarina shrugged innocently, "An' wha' 'bout it? Yeah, they're prolly a li'l irked fer ya steppin' ahead an' doin' our numba firs'."

"We were planning on it first. And there is no need to coordinate anything. Except now, we need to discuss our best course of action with more dancers here."

"But that's just it, right?" Andy frowned slightly and pointed to the folded and crumpled poster that was accusingly in the middle of the table, "They are dancers, but not really ballet dancers. Sure, it's going to be in their repertoire, but we all know that well-rounded dancers are good, great even, but not excellent. Their Nutcracker will be different and get a crowd because it's holiday material, but it will not be the same caliber as us. It's just different."

"It is based from a school. All of us are qualified enough to teach our own schools. If anything, we should invest in their best and allow them to audition for us." Bryan chimed in and was about to add more before he noticed the Count's face and grew silent.

"I do not except you all to understand the competition between two theatres. We will have different shows running at the same time. The patrons that are not interested in seeing both will pick one. We need the casual attendee as much as they do."

"They have a completely differen' agenda. So it seems." Katarina added when Christophe slanted her a look, "Look, 'm nah sayin' tha' we dun hav' ta up our game a bi', an' do a couple'a more shows, bu' we're appealin' ta two differen' groups o' people. We're doin' classics, an' they're doin' th' lates' and greates'. I dun thin' we need ta create enemies before anythin' even happens."

"Your confidence is us is flattering. I suppose I would be confident as well, sitting where you do."

Katarina shrugged, "If ya dun like where yer pocketbook's goin', then no one's makin' ya stay." She stretched her legs to stand, and was surprised when everyone else but the Count did. "I'm gonna go to their show, be real nice-like, an' see if there's a way tha' we kin all benefit fra this. Ain' gonna be mor' people 'n parents a' th' show anyway. We all wen' through this. Ain't no need ta ruin th' cycle o' thin's."

Christophe stood slowly as well, visibly skeptical of her words, "Very well. You can let them know that our holiday production will be one of the first renditions of A Christmas Carol. They want to do ballet with mediocre dancers, then we'll do a play and make it a superb ballet." The grin was slight as he excused himself before anyone else out of the room.

Madame watched the Count leave, and sighed quietly, "I don't sense much good coming from this."
