We travel in the dark of the new moon
A starry highway traced on the map of the sky
Like lovers and heroes, lonely as the eagle's cry
We're only at home when we're on the fly
On the fly

When we are young
Wandering the face of the Earth
Wondering what our dreams might be worth
Learning that we're only immortal
For a limited time
-Dreamline, Roll the Bones, Rush

Lirssa received official word through Sumar. The wysebox was sitting on her dresser next to the little swordswoman figurine she had received from Miss Eless last year when it pulsed and sent up a chirrup. It had taken Lirssa some time, and help from Robbie, to tweak the incoming message signal to just what she wanted. There are, afterall, many shades of blue.

Picking Raza up from the floor where they had been playing attack-big-sister-with-drooly-mouth, she pressed awake Sumar. The holographic image filled up slowly from the bottom to reveal Headmaster F'Pourl. He smiled and immediately began to talk. It was a recorded message. "Greetings, Lirssa al Amat. As you know, this semester we set forth a challenge to our students to excel in their studies and activities in order to earn a place on a very special expedition. Due to your achieved High and Outstanding marks, you are accepted to join in the journey to Gailanis 4. The change in destination is explained in your travel packet linked to this message. Please respond within twenty four hours to accept this invitation. Departure is in one week. Congratulations on your scholastic endeavors." And the image froze, prepared to be played again.

Lirssa rocked back down from where she had been standing on her toes. She had done it. The studying, the missing out on adventures in the city, seeing friends --it had been worth it in the end. She was going to fly among the stars at last.

Beaming a smile to Raza, she let the flood of excitement flow. Raza did not appreciate the sudden flurry of kisses from his sister, putting fingers on her face and turning away as she carried him out of her room. She giggled and hugged on him instead as she searched the house to make the excited announcement to her parents.

Her heart felt twice its size, thick and captured inside a chest too small for the thrill of anticipation. Light steps carried her quickly through the large building, and she could not stop smiling even as Raza's fingers pushed upon her cheeks and lips. He babbled and patted her mouth as they rushed around the house looking for their mother, who then would get a message to someone who likely knew where their father was hiding.

A small prick of sorrow tried to deflate her joy, but no. No, she pushed that away. It didn't matter how he found out, because she knew he would. That's all that mattered. That was what was important. That and he kept safe.

Hurrying down the stairs to the studio, she smelled the scent of oil and solvent and knew she was on the right track. She felt a little silly in disturbing the work, but -- well, she only had 24 hours to respond! "Mom! Guess what?!"

The communique signals on the wysebox. When opened there's a smiling and waving Lirssa in a very plain, navy jumpsuit with sleeves rolled to elbows. "Hiya Mom, Raza, Siva, Dante, and if Dad's there -- Hi!" More enthusiastic waving full into the screen. "Glad to see vid-com is working again." Two thumbs up. "We've been having some trouble. Seems this ship has got some issues since coming in from that refugee trip it --" suddenly static and then blank video, but the voice is still coming through. "Aw, butter and beans! Not again. Blast. Well, it'll just have to be voice message. I'll let the chief know as soon as I'm done."

The words start flying like a dragon with its tail on fire, which was the natural style of the teen. She spoke as if there might not be a breath to take next, each moment stuffed full with what she had to say. "So, yeah, as I was sayin'. Lots to do here. Yesterday I helped the Chief Engineer pull out optical cabling from a conduit that he couldn't get in to. Seems I'm skinny enough and limber enough. Actually, what Chief said was 'You're like a wire, and I need a thinking wire to get in there.' Not sure a thinking wire is really what I want to be, but you won't believe the things I saw crawling through that conduit. It was killer!

"But that's nothing to what happened two days ago when we ran into a ship with all its weapons raised. Alarms started to go off. I was on the bridge with a lieutenant, her name is Lt. Angel Archer -- what a name, huh? Anyway, she was showing me how the bridge sensors work when poof, this ship was there like a ghost. The image came up, and they started shouting something, and the translator wasn't working, and it was getting killer tense. I saw sweat on an ensign's forehead, but I didn't check to see if he wet his pants. So, Captain is trying to talk out of the situation, the communications officer is working, working to try and get us what the other captain is sayin, and I'm all like 'Hey, P'orth might know!' So, I let Lt. Archer know, and she's lookin at me like I've grown nose hairs five feet long, then punches up an internal com to get P'orth on the bridge. P'orth, I swear, looked like she was gonna throw up -- maybe a cow sized something. But she didn't. I stood by her, held her hand, and she got this frowny look, then started to translate! I was so proud of her! So, in the end, the ship was looking for a terrorist ship that escaped that way, and our ship sorta fit the description. It was a mess, but really liked watchin the Captain talk his way out of it. He's killer. Sorta like Dad and Errol Flynn rolled into one. Even has that thin moustache!"

There's noise in the background, a voice overheard telling Lirssa her time is up. "Okay, I gotta go now. My shift with the doctor on board. She's stuffy, but I'm told she knows her stuff. I'm hopin' everthin' is good there for you all, you know what I mean." There was weight to the words. She spoke earnestly and slowed down the speed of each sentence. "Love you all. Say hi to my friends for me." And the sound of an ending transmission.

Lirssa stood in the guest gallery of the great auditorium where the interplanetary council was convened. "It seems sorta harsh, don't ya think?" She asked Lt. Archer, the closest of the chaperons with the students that day.

The spiral catacomb of seats in the great hall structure were as busy as a hive; blurs of motion and the hazy hum of conversations carried on the air. The other students stood as she did at the curve of the gallery, hands on the railing. The atmosphere was tense as the political gears turned and twisted between representatives.

"Harsh in what way? You don't think it is a bit alarming that the Premiere Councilor Kulaiiri, or previous PC, could be influenced out of his sworn position while suffering one of his seizures?"

Lirssa scowled. "I'd be thinkin' if he's havin' a seizure, he won't be hanging about negotiations or anythin' but his bed."

A snicker crinkled a corner of the lieutenant's lip. "As if the seizures have runner boys to say 'Please do not set any meetings during the hours of 1400 and 2300, as we plan on having a seizure then'." Archer folded her arms. "They say he used to have medicine that could keep the seizures at bay, but now it has lost the effect. He'd be like a puppet."

"Still, seems they coulda talked him into stepping down." Lirssa caught herself as she said it and shook her head. "Nope, he shoulda stepped down earlier or on his own. Yeah, seems like he's getting what he deserved."

"That's a quick switch of feelings."

"I'm whimmy like that." Lirssa grinned up at the lieutenant, and then looked back to the hundreds of conversations going on, focusing on those representatives that seemed to discuss the situation with no one at all.

One particular group sat completely still, and as Lirssa stared to try and catch them moving at all, her teacher spoke up and started the lesson for the day about the method taken for selection of a new Premiere, and the plan for tomorrow -- the day they start home.

It had all gone by so fast. Not much longer, and a new semester would start. Lirssa did look forward to getting home. She missed breakfasts at the table, working out with her parents, snuggling up for reading with Raza at night.

A glimpse to the hall once more made her smile. They would not be there for the finalization of the deliberations, but she hoped she could follow along at home. Surely there was some way to tap into the interplanetary council news. It was exciting, for certain, to have seen it all happen and hear the gossip among the adults about the change. Still, her own bed and a Dante heart to listen to while she slept was something to look forward to, as well.

She determined she would write all she could on the journey home about what had happened, what she had seen, and what she had learned. Determined beyond the fact that it was an assignment given with a glint to the eyes of her teacher.
