Perchance to Dream

OOC:

Hey everyone!

Arcane and Metaphysical Theory, a magic class taught by Atticus at the Academy of Bristle Crios, has recently undertaken a field trip to the realm of Dream (a universal plane of dreams; a dreamscape or similar to aboriginal 'dreamtime', that type of thing), and you're invited to participate!

The items which the class are examining in Dream are called De-lights; they're fragments of larger dreams that, for some reason, are observable floating free range in certain regions of Dream. The one common denominator of the De-lights, and the images that can be viewed in them, is that they're not something the dreamer wishes to keep private. The reason the dreamer would want to share them, however, is up in the air: perhaps they're hopeful or joyful, and it fills them to bursting; perhaps they inspire terror or despair, and the dreamer doesn't want to face them alone.

If you have a character, main or relative npc – doesn't matter, that has a dream that might be found in our class, you're welcome to submit the dream in question either to the thread below, or if for some reason you want anonymity, PM it to this account and I'll add it anonymously.

Either way, you'll be rewarded with a participation icon, and one dreamer will receive an in character reward: a Barrington Codex – dropped by a hapless student (teacher?) who was so absorbed by a particular dream, they forgot what they were doing. The students will actually vote, out of character, on what the 'most powerful' (moving, funny; readers choice of criteria) dream. The Barrington Codex is a virtually indestructible tome which can be used to house and keep safe almost anything you can cram into the hollow inside cover, and which will automatically index whatever notes, pictures, spells, Facebook friends, Tinder matches, etc., for later use/record. Normally they have to be keyed to someone, but these are special circumstances; the method of using it can remain a mystery to your character, or, you can say it came to them in a dream. Actual instructions on how to use it may be found here.

Obviously, subject to rules and conditions: students and teacher characters already present in Dream need not apply. Smile

And now, on to the Dreams...

A&M Theory Class. Field Trip. The Plane of Dream.

Atticus slipped hand into his robe pocket, and withdrew a glassy sphere that fit neatly in his palm. As he lifted his hand, and opened it, the glass took on a more ethereal quality, like a will o' the wisp. The students were for the most part engrossed in the wonders native to the plane, both the way that reality seemed to respond to their mental state, and to the De-lights which they had set about examining. The De-lights appeared at a distance like no more than a dandelion's puffball, but upon closer examination shone with a light – and a reality – from within. The De-lights bore many similarities to the object Atticus had withdrawn, and as if like called to like, the light began to flicker and dance in his palm, rising up and floating as if on a breeze to slowly join the De-lights.

One of his students had earlier raised a moral issue, regarding looking at people's dreams, one that he had answered – he felt suitably – by telling her that the De-lights were subjective to both the viewer and the dreamer, regarding who could see them, which was the truth. The question had roused his immediate attention because his mind had already been on the ramifications of tampering with someone's dreams: more specifically, the effects of taking them tangibly from the realm of Dream into the waking world. He had committed the crime of dream theft in the past, and had stolen his own dream, returning with it to the waking world. Just now, he had returned it, having paid greatly for removing it from where it belonged: Atticus could no longer dream, and for many years had only been able to access Dream physically, as his class did now.

He wasn't at all certain that returning his dream to it's home plane would restore the ability, but it's release felt right, and he closed his eyes in it's recollection.

Darkness, overwhelming, and oppressing crushed the boy who lay at it's centre. The epitome of loneliness, he was curled in upon himself in the foetal position, but with eyes wide open, murmuring softly to himself. It wasn't the dark that he was afraid of, and he knew the darkness around him wasn't the real darkness; it wasn't the absence of light, it was the absence of even the dichotomy of light and dark. His mouth moved, but there was no sound. Seeds of flickering, glowing energy drifted soundlessly from his lips as they moved, floating into the darkness, forming a sphere around him. Eight and more tiny seeds floated from his lips to surround him, their colours oscillating through the spectrum as they flickered and shone.

The boy sat up, looking around. There were no walls, floor, or ceiling, and the filaments of light now surrounded him, illumining him, and casting back the would be darkness. There were myriad lights, and though there was no sound, his mouth formed their names and each one seemed to burn brighter in turn as he acknowledged them. As the last one was named, a web of light and energy began to flicker among them, drawing them tighter, and binding their place in relation to each other.

The boy smiled and lay down, closing his eyes as if to sleep. Instead of sleep, however, his form began both to shrink in upon itself, and to shine. The smaller his form became, the more the light he threw flickered and danced, always smaller and brighter, until it was the same as the other lights which had floated from the boy's lips. The light that had been the boy remained in the centre of the others, and the web of energy which connected them slowly reached towards it as well, until all of them were connected. The intensity of their light grew until it beat back the would be darkness, not with light alone, but with all manner of creation that should have surrounded the silent boy.

And it was good.

As Atticus's eyes opened, he tried to spot the dream fragment that he had released. He couldn't. Many and more of them floated through the area where the class had disembarked for it's would be field trip, and in the vast sea of them, his was no more significant than any other.

Y A S M I N

Her name was in bold, colorful, flashing neon lights behind her as she was singing on stage in front of thousands of people screaming and singing along with her in the massive arena. With her glittering hot pink microphone in her hand, she belted out the lyrics in rhythm with the band playing behind her. She danced around on stage, making her way onto a small platform suspended a few feet above her adoring audience. Bending down to grab her fans’ hands, she took a few moments to sing to each one of their smiling faces around her.

So overwhelmed with the love and support, she could feel her eyes start to tear up. Standing up quickly, she turned and made her way back to the stage, wiping her hand over her eyes and face as if simply wiping away sweat from the dance routine workout.

As she got into position on center stage, she finished up the song, throwing both hands up into the air just as fireworks shot off behind her and confetti rained down over the crowd. She bowed several times, blowing kisses and thanking her loving fans profusely while her band members filed behind the curtain to go backstage.

“Yas-min! Yas-min! Yas-min!” the crowd chanted together, filling her heart even more. She hated to go, but she knew the show was over and she would have even more fun backstage; chatting with her agent and friends, meeting the ‘backstage pass’ fans, and signing autographs on her way out.

Still waving, Yasmin walked to the curtain, pulled it back and darted backstage.

No one was there.

The dimly lit backstage area was completely empty. Her agent, who was always the first to greet her, was no where to be seen. Her band mates were gone. Not even a sound stagehand was there, let alone any ‘backstage pass’ fans. She could only barely hear the chanting fans behind her through the curtain. Determined to find her admiration, she turned around. As she threw back the curtain once again, the sound ceased. She walked out onto the stage to an empty arena. Confetti littered the ground that had once been packed with people. But there was no way they could have fled that quickly. She leaned over the front of the stage, trying to get a better look around. As she did, she slipped and fell forward.

Just as she was about to hit the ground, she jolted awake.

Breathing heavily, she looked around her small apartment in the Marketplace. Everything was just as she had left it. Aside from her pet seamonkies, it was just as vacant and lonely as her dream. Turning onto her side, she laid in bed for awhile with her eyes open. Eventually, she calmed down, closed her eyes, and fell back to sleep, but not before wiping her eyes from the sweat.

The battle began in the lower atmosphere. Breathing the air was survivable, but the fall to the ground below was not.

The Heartbreaker made a sharp right turn with its captain stood in the bridge, a wicked smile cracking his face. Not a soul dared let out a peep, anticipation filling the air so thickly one could almost touch it. A hand signal was all the pilot needed before the ship's sub-light drives caused even the most sure footed crew member to grab onto a nearby surface as the cruiser shot forward.

A massive explosion broke the deathly silence aboard the ship as they rammed the Militia Destroyer, and the forward hatches were opened. Pirates let off battle cries and began boarding the enemy, the opposing Militia already in shambles from the brute force of the attack. Within minutes the shootout inside it came to a stop, the leader of the Militia forces surrendering before the ship fell out of the sky entirely. After brief negotiations, the scourge of space, pirate Jake Valentine, captain of the Heartbreaker, agreed to take them all on as prisoners and crew to spare them from crashing to the ground below, despite clarifying he would ensure they regretted not choosing death. As they transferred between the ships, walking a small sheet of metal placed between the gap of the two, Captain Valentine was starting to comment about how he was more merciful than the Militia gave him credit.

Before he finished the statement, he was shoved. The gap between the two ships was the perfect size to allow the captain to plummet past, towards the rocky planet below. A mountain spire was rising to meet him fast, to pierce him right in the chest, before a blinding light appeared.

Eyes shot open as a sunbeam fell across Jakobi's face through the window, casting a panicked glance across his surroundings from atop his bed. A hand reached up and felt his chest, right across his heart where the mountain peak would have impaled him, and confirmed that he was indeed now in the waking world. With a groan, he shielded his eyes with a pillow and mumbled something about never drinking moonshine again.

Elessaria turned her attention from the meal she was setting out beneath the shade of a cluster of palm trees when the chorus of laughter rang above the song of the ocean’s waves lapping at the sandy shore. She stopped her humming and smiled. The little boy with tousled curls, bleached blond by the sun’s rays, café au lait skin also a gift from the sun and hazel eyes that mirrored his father’s, but leaned more green, was darting in and out along the water’s edge to collect even more shells to add to his ever expanding collection. Connar, tanned, relaxed and laughing while he helped and as the waves splashed the pair. She stopped her contented humming and watched for a few moments, breathing in deeply of the fresh breeze that had been slowly and steadily building. It teased the golden tendrils of her hair and fluttered the hem of her floral printed skirt while it heralded the arrival of a late afternoon storm. The diminutive elfess wondered if she should move their picnic indoors; however, since they all seemed to prefer the outdoors, she simply weighed down the corners of the large, brightly coloured blankets with some rocks from the toddler’s other collection. Some of the stones were chosen for their unusual shapes, others for the way crystals sparkled from within, and the ones Eless had chosen, were ones that had been painted in rainbow hues by a chubby, enthusiastic, little hand.

The pair radiated happiness, although the little lad’s was broadcast loud and clear due to his empathic gifts which he had yet to learn to shield very well. She shook her head and chuckled, returning to set the casual table. There were an assortment of succulent fruits, thinly sliced cured meats, fresh bread and a variety of cheeses to fill bellies that were hungry from a day of play. Hopefully, all the activity would wear him out and he’d fall asleep at a decent time. To finish the meal, there were delicate madeleines which they had baked together this morning, their delicate shapes a bit askew because the tiny hands were not yet skilled, but they would taste all the more delicious for the effort put into making them. As Eless placed her dainty hand to her brow and lifted her gaze to the sky to check on the clouds that were beginning to block out large swaths of blue, she was startled by a panicked yelp and quickly shifted her gaze to the shoreline while beginning to take a few hasty steps that way. Lyavain was a blur of white, stirred from his shady spot, and before she had traveled a couple yards, he was with father and son. Everyone moved faster than The Empath these days.

She clamped down on her concern, but bit hard on the inside of her cheek until she saw Connar deftly pluck the child, who coughed, laughed and spit out salt water with his treasured shells still clasped tightly in his hands. The waves had been growing steadily stronger and rougher as the storm built faster over the sea. One unexpected surge had caught the little, sturdy adventurer unaware when he had bent over to pick up another shell. Once Connar had set him securely on his own two little feet, he crowed triumphantly, “Papa, that was fun!” Eless groaned both audibly and wearily, shaking her head.

“Go wash up,” father instructed son while he attempted to hide his own grin, “it’s time to eat.” He added more quietly, “And before you make Maman faint or something.”

“I heard that!” She scolded and shook her head once more as the trio approached, trying to affect a stern demeanor and keep the corners of her lips from twitching and betraying her laughter. The toddler paused in his skipping to dump his pile of treasure by one corner of the blanket before he placed a small, sandy hand on the gentle swelling of his mother’s abdomen. “Do not fret! Tout va bien!” he chirped confidently, then Lyavain padded forward to herd his charge inside to clean up.

Connar’s hazel gaze met her eyes of blue flames as he slipped his strong arms about her. The flames danced brightly in the gaze she tilted up to his as she quipped, “He is just like…”

“his maman!”
“his papa!”

They both retorted simultaneously with merry laughter. “He is fearless and dare I say, reckless at times?” She added softly with a sigh as she rested her cheek against his chest to hear his heart beat.

“Like his mother.” Connar teased. “And this one?” he added more gently as he tenderly placed a palm on her abdomen just like their son had done only moments earlier.

“We can only hope she doth have a bit more restraint, n’est-ce pas?” The only thing the elfess knew for certain was she knew exactly what eyes this baby would have – eyes of blue flame, like her mother and her half-brother whom they had never met. When she lifted her gaze once more, he could easily read the concern that simmered amidst her expressive eyes. He always could and he wasn’t even empathic. He cupped her cheek and placed a reassuring kiss to her forehead, “Du calme, cher. You should listen to our son. Tout va bien.”

When she felt the warm wetness upon her cheeks, she wasn’t sure if was her tears or the clouds finally releasing big, fat drops of rain.
