From The Outback - July 9, 2007 - Approximately 19:40-21:00
Monday night, the Inn was crowded. More so than usual, which was unusual given Fists was happening tonight. S'jira and he had been at the bar getting something to drink, and the crowd was just getting to be a bit much. For both of them.

Someone he had been trying to bump in to for a couple of days wasn't there, but since the Outback was open there was a good chance she would be there. A good excuse to get away from the crowd for a bit, and maybe S'jira would enjoy seeing the Outback.

And there she was, the governor herself. Lounging at the bar watching the duel taking place. After asking S'jira if she wanted anything he suggested she watch the duel while he go grab a drink from the bar. He didn't want to worry her any more than she had been should she overhear what he needed to talk to Kitty about.

Information is what he was after, still. He had made a few more inquires, or rather his alter-ego did, looking for any bits of information a loose purse-string may find on the streets and in the alleys around the city. But he knew Kitty had connections that even he could not reach, so it was worth asking her as well. She, herself did not know anything he did not already know, but promised to dig in to it. He tried to keep the conversation as private as possible, but given the small crowd in the Outback this night, others there were bound to overhear something. And sure enough someone did.

The Egyptian.

As he was heading back to join S'jira, Anubis had finished his duel and was now making a direct line to intercept his own path. He had to fight his own body to keep his fur from bristling as the sound of those sandals on the floor approached. And while his ears turned back slightly, he would not let this man, who had tried to kill him on more than one occasion, see any outward signs from him that he did not want him to see.

"If you speak of matters that interest me, in a region in which I consider my turf for such matters, I will take interest." Never one to mince words, Anubis spoke this even as he closed in on where he had come to pause near S'jira.

At the moment, he was showing he would have little patience, his tail moved in short, whip-like motions even as S'jira moved to stand just behind him and to the side. This was expected, though it did happen sooner than he had anticipated.

Anubis grinned at him as he spoke, a grin that only made him want to strike out all the more. "You say he wants someone associated with you, and you wish to avoid that fate. Would I be wrong if I guessed that this other prominent patron of the Inn who wants to hide someone from him..is not you, and this is a coincidence?"

"With what I paid, I had expected another day or two before things reached you." He spoke as he cooly regarded the Egyptian. "I may need to retrieve some of my coin..."

"Entire dynasties were not put to rest with enough gold to keep alcohol from loosening some tongues. I can give you some advice and information, but...." Spoken as the gaze of the Egyptian moved to the figure beside him. "I need to have a warning attached with it."

He could feel S'jira shift her pose slightly as he slid his own body between hers and that of the Egyptian.

The dour expression that swept over the Egyptian actually surprised him a bit as he spoke on... "She's a true slave, through and through. I'd start with getting rid of all trappings that say such, and try to convince her to talk and walk like any of the bar harlots you can find at all hours of the night next door. Even if you get him off of her trail, it will only be a matter of time before someone else wants to prove himself and tries to grab her."

He felt S'jira move again, behind him more. His tail jerking aside of it's own accord as she moved closer.

"In the Inn, I'd see that she's watched and under potential protection at all times. Preferably by a male who you know can fight, if you are not present. Don't worry too much about this becoming a long-term burden. Travanix gets bored easily. No patience or taste for a long hunt." The Egyptian continued on almost as if giving a speech, one meant for more than just himself. "In fact, the time it takes to help integrate her into free society should mesh nicely with the time it takes for him to find another quarry. And that, my friend, is the advice I can give you without thinking about it for some time. Well, and this...don't accept unmarked gifts."

Most of what he was hearing was known, but having it confirmed from one such as this only steeled his mind further, even as his teeth ground at his use of 'my friend'. "What is your price for this... Or are you sharing out of the kindness of your heart... " Those last few words slipped from his lips as a deep hiss.

"Cats are still as vigilant as ever, I see." The closest thing to a smile this man could claim to show crossed the Egyptians features as he cut to the chase. "Just an understanding between us. I won't lie to you or bore you with euphemisms. I'll hunt in the Inn and it's grounds from time to time myself. I'll do so without stepping on important toes or breaking trusts I've already made. But I will do so. I'd like an understanding that just as you tacitally accept Talomar's and Travanix's trade, you'll do so with mine."

He felt S'jira reach out, fingertips brushing his side. His tail brushing her shins. He locked gazes with the Egyptian for a number of seconds, thoughts spinning nearly out of control in his mind before he replied. "Even the maggot can serve a purpose in the right circumstance... agreed."

A slow breath was released before he continued. "But remember, all good hunters know to guard against over-thinning the herds."

The Egyptian continued to meet his gaze and after a moment there was a ghost of a chortle, one which died within the Egyptians chest.

"Founder of the Outback and overseer of the madhouse that is the Inn...and in 20 minutes time, I perfectly understand why."

Compliment or not, those words sent an uneasy chill down his spine as the Egyptian continued speaking. "You're right about over-thinning the herd. And you've also hit at the crux of why it's in my interests to make Travanix's life a problem. I'll leave you to enjoy the evening. She's a beautiful girl." As he made a sweeping gesture towards the figure behind him. "It's no mystery why he'd want her."

And with that he turned and moved away.

As he turned with S'jira to return to the Dragon, he was left with a number of thoughts. Chief among them, another decision was made in almost as many days that was going to have lasting consequences. Consequences he hoped he was prepared for.
