Elessaria's knee-length hair was still damp as she did a last minute check on the fresh floral arrangements that decorated the main room of the shop. Any blossoms that were less than perfect were immediately removed. In less than an hour, Eva and Mason were to join her in the final preparations before Heart Notes opened officially at noon. The elf had also sent a message to the Tower of Air to see if Rena could join them. One was sent to Piper's abode as well; however, the potter hadn't been seen in awhile - much to the empath's concern. She didn't believe there would be that much interest in the parfumerie to warrant all the help, but she really needed their moral support. Eless hadn't slept all night nor eaten; she only had a cup of tea because her nerves were getting the best of her.

The novice business owner placed the finishing touches on a grouping of perfume bottles that were available for sale. When her friends got here, she would have them complete the display of the bottles of simple, pre-made cologne that she had already begun. Although Heart Notes was primarily for creating signature fragrances for her clientele, there were a number of other offerings in simple blends that one could wear singly or layer based on their personal taste. There were also scented soaps, lotions, bath oils and a huge array of antique and modern perfume bottles. Many of which were commissioned from the Kaiser brothers.

For the last minute shopper who wished to purchase a signature scent for the Valentine's holiday, Elessaria would offer a calligraphied certificate for a personal fragrance to be crafted to go with the current purchase of a perfume bottle. This way there would still be a lovely gift for the recipient to open.

In the very early morning, while the sun was yet shedding its light on other lands, a visitor came to the newly-opened shop. It was quiet, dark and still, the shopkeeper having long-since concluded her first day of business.

A small, time-faded envelope was place on the doorstep along with a single red rose, the soft petals clinging tightly together against the cool night air.

As the nocturnal visitor stepped away, he turned to look back at the shop and the familiar doorstep, and then he retook his journey.

The shopkeeper would find a note in the envelope written upon a small piece ancient parchment. The note reads as follows:

Dearest shopkeeper,

I feared, given the lateness of the hour and the great distances I am at times required to travel, that I might not have the pleasure of visiting your parfumerie on its opening day. I would like to place an order, but do not know where to begin. I pray ye may be able to decipher the sentiments that I am unable to articulate and wrest from inside.

I wish for a scent that could fill my being with a sense of calm and peace, something I can carry with me always.

It would need to be soft, quiet, sensitive - yet having the ability to dissipate heavy burdens when called upon.

The scent I seek would have the allure of a moon-lit beach, waves cresting and falling upon sun-warmed sands.

When this potion is near me, all cares would fade away. I could bask in its beauty and feel as rich as a king.

I have, on occasion the great fortune to experience such feelings and emotions, though not nearly as oft as I would like. Were I able to be with it always, then my life would truly be heaven blest.

I know the hour is late, for I would have this for a gift to share on St. Valentine's day. I do not know the hour of my return, but, should I tarry, I pray to have occasion to share with ye the source of such delight.

Your devoted servant,

Connar

Not too long after the sun rose, Elessaria descended the staircase from her private quarters upstairs and slipped silently into the main room of the shop. Yesterday had been very successful for a first day and she appreciated the assistance of her friends in making it so. She opened the door to the main entrance of the parfumerie and checked the box for any orders that may have been left after hours. Since it was a holiday that celebrated love, she had planned on an early start for those last minute shoppers.

A soft gasp of delight escaped the empath's lips, the breath forming a little puff of white in the chilly morning air. She reached slowly for the envelope and red rose -- the last gift had taught her a bit of caution-- until she could sense the traces of Connar's presences lingering on the ancient parchment and the flower with it. She took them inside to the back room where she had a pot of tea brewing, excitement sparkling in her eyes. With slightly trembling fingers, she carefully opened the missive and read it, the smile blossoming upon her soft lips, until crystalline tears clouded his handwriting. Eless then took the delicate rose and inhaled its sweet fragrance, delighting in its natural essence that hothouse flowers could never duplicate. With the letter in one hand and a cup of tea in the other, she settled to sit hearthside where she read the heartfelt "order" repeatedly until she forced herself from pleasant reveries to begin another day.

Any visitors to the parfumerie would note the sparkle in her eyes and the smile upon her visage -- no matter how difficult the customer might be. Fatigue was chased away by such a lovely gift and her heart bubbled over with happiness.

Earlier, the day of the opening......

Mason arrived a little after 10:00. He was running a little late for the set up but he arrived bearing gifts. The early morning had been spent in the kitchen at the inn. When he arrived at the shop he was carrying two large boxes filled with bite sized fruit tarts and canapés and a pair of Eva's shoes on top. He had opted for a pair of black slacks and a dress shirt and dark blue sweater and of course the signature scent Eless had made for him.

"Stop sweating, Bug. It will be great." Grinning as he came in the door and noted Eless' anxious expression. Mason went about preparing platters of the treats for the customers to snack upon as they came to check out the shop. That done, he busied himself with whatever last minute jobs that needed to be done around the place. He kept the conversation light, joking with Eless and Eva in hopes of calming the nervous new store owner.

When the bell tolled the noon hour he took up a place beside one of the display counters and watched Eless as she went to unlock the door. It was her show. Though Mason had a hand in providing some of the audience for that show. By the half hour mark of Heart Notes Parfumerie being opened a carriage pulled to a stop on the street. "That would be for me." He straightened his sweater and collar and a wink was given to Eva and Eless before he headed to the door and stepped outside.

Mason called up something to the driver of the carriage; he nodded and remained in his seat as Mason opened the door. One by one he helped the women inside the carriage out onto the street. They were, as Mason referred to them, the leaders of the Blue Hair Brigade. The threesome was all elderly and dressed to the nines; no doubt off to high tea after their little shopping excursion. There was Mrs. Vanderkamp, a large woman with a stern face. Mrs. Henson, a fragile mouse of a woman that was constantly plucking at the cuffs of the lace gloves that she wore. The last woman to emerge from the carriage was Mrs. Byrne. A willowy woman with bright blue eyes and a cheery smile.

Mason took Mrs. Byrne's hand and tucked it into the crook of his arm after he had helped her down from the carriage. He paused with the threesome outside the store front. Speaking and laughing with the woman as he showed them the window displays. It was clear that all three of the woman found him to be a most charming fellow. Even Mrs. Vanderkamp was smiling as Mason escorted them to the door of the Perfumerie. He pulled the door and held it open for the other two ladies to step inside. Mrs. Byrne was still on his arm when they joined the others inside.

"Lillian..." he patted Mrs. Byrne's hand.” Ladies, welcome to Heart Notes Parfumerie." The threesome were already looking around and taking in the sights of the shop. Mason was smiling as he looked over at Eless and Eva. He did the introductions." So, these are the friends you have told me about, Mason." Lillian said as she smiled to them both. She reiterated her thanks to Eless for the herbal teas she had sent over with Mason. Blue eyes smiling as the elderly woman looked to Eva. "It is a pleasure to meet you both. I can see why I have heard so much about you." She patted Mason on the arm." Why don't you go see to Hattie and Vie while I talk scents with these lovely ladies?" Mason looked between the three of them. He wasn't sure if that was code for women talk but he did give them a nod before he headed off to Mrs. Vanderkamp and Henson. Within moments he had them laughing like young girls over the various scents of delicately carved soaps.

Lillian Byrne smiled cheerfully at Eva and gave her a wink. "He’s a rascal and he is right, you are lovely, dear." Looking to Eless then, "Now, tell me about these signature scents."

No doubt the shop would be the talk of the high tea crowd for days to come. Heart Notes should get a few regular clients from that faction.

In his years in the military, Ali had developed three standard operating rules:

1) Always keep your gun clean.
2) Eyes forward in the shower.
3) Never go into enemy territory alone.

This was definitely not home base. Walking into the Parfumerie des Notes de Coeur, Ali was bludgeoned over the head by how much it was like trespassing into a woman's boudoir. His sensitive nose was overwhelmed on the spot. He broke out into goosebumps. His hair tried to stand on end. He stood stunned. He'd been here before, sure, but that had been in the workroom, with Elessaria expecting him, guiding him through the process of refining the scent he'd wanted, easing him out once they were done. It hadn't been anything at all like...like this.

"Try this," she'd said, and held out the little vials for him. "Too much? What about this?" And another vial, and then something to do with coconut had been waved under his nose to give it a rest. It had all been very soothing. But now...

Passing into the storefront was like being inside a jewelbox. Glass shone and sparkled on all sides, nearly blinding him: bottles and mirrors reflecting candles, spring sunlight pouring through a nearer window. Flowers, surely hothouse blooms at this time of year, spilled out of vases in random places. Everything was pale and bright and elegantly, daintily wrought--he'd never understood so well the phrase "bull in a china shop" as he stood there and prayed he'd not break anything. A bevy of blue-haired busybodies stopped speaking to stare at him, then burst into a fresh flurry of behind-the-hand whispering. A dark-haired, dark-skinned woman in a blue sari gave him a sweet sloe-eyed glance, then exited. He held the door for her.

White orchid, lotus blossoms, Egyptian jasmine, vanilla absolute, and light musk. Some of the words made more sense to him than others. Why was this particular vanilla more absolute than any other? If this was light musk, how overbearing was heavy? Eau de Skunk? Whatever it all meant, he was assured that the perfume was precisely like his last test of Elessaria's scents: delicate, powerful, mysterious, seductive. Perfect. Absolutely perfect.

The woman herself swept into the room, wearing one of those long flowing dresses she seemed so fond of. Elessaria was as usual all demure smiles, dulcet tones, artfully witty under the cover of her archaic turns of phrase. She took charge of him again, somehow sensing his unease, and led him to choose a suitable bottle. The scent was decanted into it, and he paid, and was suddenly out on the street again, bearing her last fond pat on his shoulder.

He actually had to check his watch. Eight minutes. Shaking his head, he went on his merry way.

Elessaria sat sipping tea while her three elderly voisines traded gossip and nibbled on the freshly baked madeleines. Their descent upon the shop, while almost a daily occurrence, was not a surprise for the empath-- especially after last night. Their voices provided a quiet humming backdrop for her drifting thoughts.

"Elessaria," Signorina Ortolani cleared her throat more loudly which drew the elfess from her reverie. The blue-haired spinster repeated with a hint of annoyance, "Last night, just who was that who..."

King John's sudden squawking and shouted curses saved Eless from the imminent interrogation. She pushed away from the counter and dashed to the back door of the shop where she saw the courier in a heap of boxes with thousands of delicate white jasmine petals covering his rapidly reddening features. "What in the Nine circles of Hades happened?" she questioned the dazed young man.

"I dinnae know what hit me, ma'am. I'm verra sorra," he sniffled, not because he was truly apologetic, but rather because his allergies were triggered by the unexpected floral shower. With a soft sigh of frustration, the empath escorted the young man into the back room and gave him a cup of an herbal brew to ease the sneezing and an ice pack to help reduce the swelling of the knot on his forehead.

Eless had waved the voisines back into the front room asking them to keep an eye on the business while she gathered up the boxes from the garden courtyard. After sweeping up as much of the jasmine blossoms as possible, she hoped she had enough to make the oils for Aja's fragrance or the project would be delayed and she really did not want to beg a favor of Prince Karan for more.

Raking her slender fingers through her hair, she stepped back out into the main salon in time to see Mistress Thomas set a silver wrapped package on the marble counter top. "What's this?" Eless queried suspiciously.

"It is addressed to you," responded Madame d'Orleans. "We are waiting for you to open it." The three eyed the package and the empath like vultures who hadn't dined on a carcass in over a month.

"Hmm..." was Eless' non-committal reply; however, a quick glance at the card confirmed their statement. The handwriting was unfamiliar, but an amused smile lit her countenance when she read the inside. The voisines glanced at each other and Signorina Ortolani urged her on with a flutter of gnarled fingers. She untied the sapphire bow tentatively in front of her expectant audience and the lingering aura that clung to the ribbon confirmed the sender.

"Dépêches-toi!" Her tone was gentle, but Madame d'Orleans curiosity was getting the best of her and she wasn't even an elf! Sensing nothing untoward, Eless slowly unwrapped the neatly creased paper whose brightness was beginning to hurt her eyes. Then again, she was most likely beginning a headache after today's events. She kept the paper propped up as an impromptu shield and then peeked warily inside of the box. When she spied the contents within, she dissolved into a fit of merry laughter, quickly replacing the cover and tucking the package safely behind the counter.

The disappoint trio cried in unison, "Well?"

"'Tis nothing, Mesdames," she responded although the sparkling of her eyes belied her words. "'Tis a joke," was all they were going to get out of the empath who then busied herself with dusting the endless collection of breakables that occupied the main windows in an attempt to avoid any further question.

Later in the afternoon when the elfess had a quiet moment, she sat in a shaft of sunlight and penned a note.

Plumes of Blooms had been in business for twenty years. It was hard to think back to a time before the flower shop had been part of her family’s everyday life at that edge of New Haven. Still, in all those years, Genevieve heard the same thing every holiday season from her mother, Amaryllis, “We’re busier than we were last year.”

Genevieve would turn from her work table making floral arrangements, lifting blue eyes to her brothers, and they would all smile to each other. Joshua would call back for them into the hot house where their mother fussed over the plant life, “You’re right, mother.”

They were not any busier, but neither was it slow. It was steady, and just as Benjamin was getting ready to open the door, tugging at his green apron and checking his hair, the back door buzzer rattled them. “Go on, Ben, I will see what it is about.” Josh brushed his hands on his own apron, much dirtier already, and went to answer the door.

Ginny started to tie the ribbon around the red glass vase when Josh came back. Other years, five years ago in fact, it would have been father making sure the shop ran smoothly, but he was dead and it had fallen to Josh as the eldest. “Heart Notes sent one of their street kids with an urgent order. They need more lavender, lily, and orchid. I have to stay here and help Ben move that tree further from the front window. Could you run the order over, Ginny?”

Could she? Ginny stood abruptly, reaching back to steady her workstool that threatened to topple over. “Oh, of course.” She reached to take the order, being sure to fulfill the specified amounts into the cloth lined basket. It was delicate work making the right cuttings, choosing the precise flowers and fronds that would yield the necessary oils.

“Ginny? Ginny what are you about, girl?” Her mother came hurrying over, her white hair escaping from the purple paisley wrap. “You be gentle with that stem. Honestly.” Then she crooned to the plant. “Aww, my pet, she did not mean it. She’ll be good to you.”

“Yes, mother. Sorry.” Ginny felt a little pride in how well she kept the sigh out of her words. Her brothers and she had years to practice just the right tone to placate their eccentric mother.

Without another word, Amaryllis went on down the row of nurtured and beloved plants. Ginny shrugged and then stretched the anxiousness from her shoulders. She was more than happy to run the errand, and particularly to Heart Notes Parfumerie. The heady mixtures of scents was a treat for her more than any baker’s morning oven aromas.

The rattling of the panes in their back door window was enough warning for her to wear her heavy coat. She pinned her hat, tied her scarf, and then grabbed the basket to tread out into the streets. There was no thinking of dallying. Besides the honor of Plumes of Blooms for expedient delivery, her heart was pumping in anticipation of the scent of the day. Would it be a plum with tones of musk and rose? Perhaps it would be the lily needed heightened with a touch of almond. Of course, the scents had further layers that tickled at Ginny’s herblore. It was like unlocking the keys to wondrous puzzles deciphering the fragrances in the air.

It was not long before she turned the corner and came to the Heart Notes Parfumerie. With other vendors Ginny would go to the back delivery, but long ago she had discovered a peacock resided in the back yard. It was not that he had done anything particularly to harm her, but he always started to head towards her with his plumage unfurling and looking very intent. She hated to admit that she feared him.

When she went to the front door, however, she was struck still just inside the entrance at the gaggle of shoppers inside. In fact, Ginny, for all her height, could not spy the proprietress. It was a whirlpool of noise and affliction of the senses with all the movement of bodies. One lady’s handbag nearly knocked over a delicate glass bottle, and Ginny lurched to catch it. “Oh, my, thank you dear. It is rather close in here.” The woman looked at the basket of flowers peaking out of their warm canvas cover, then back up to her. “That is just what I need; lily water. Now, where?”

“Over here, ma’am.” Ginny led to the fragrant waters, less heady than perfumes or oils. “You will find that there is a complimentary bath salt and soap over here as well.”

It was as if she had plastered a sign to herself. Others heard her assist the lady and turned to her for equal assistance. With each customer, Ginny removed a layer of her winter weather clothing. The basket of flowers was taken to the edge of the work room in the walking of one woman to the lotions counter. Hat, coat rested in a corner when she pointed out the fragrant candles. Whatever hour she had arrived, it had gone twice over before she realized that a glittering pair of eyes was following her. She peaked over her shoulder, and shamefully blushed. Oh, what must the lady think of her?

The throng of customers that had descended upon Heart Notes seemed to be dispelled faster than the weary proprietress had expected. Elessaria didn't really have time to dwell upon the how's or why's until she saw an unexpected savior in the form of the Hilliard lass from Plumes of Blooms. After the elfess dispatched her last custom order to a beaming young man who had hoped to surprise his fiancee, Eless leaned an ivory silk clad hip against a low table and watched the lovely young woman assist one of the more particular elderly women who frequented Heart Notes, her eyes sparkling during her appraisal.

Genevieve was polite and attentive while listening to Mistress Park's requests. She gently steered the woman to a more appropriate selection -- much to Eless' approval. The parfumeuse refused to allow her customers to wear anything but the most suitable fragrances even if it was not what they had originally wanted. Tall, conservatively dressed with neatly coiffed hair and bright, alert eyes. The florist seemed to have a solid background in herblore as well. Could it be true?

There was only one way for Elessaria to find out and when she ushered out the last customer, she beamed a smile to the young woman. "'Tis Ginny, aye?" she questioned softly. "I know thou hast been long away from thy shoppe, but I would love to have thee join me for a cup of tea before I send thee on thy way. 'Tis the least I can do to show my appreciation for thy timely assistance."

"Yes, miss," she nodded to affirm the name correct. "Ginny Hilliard. I brought the order you requested, and..." And what pray tell? She got caught up in the store and presumed to pretensions of salesgirl? "And yes, thank you, tea would be fine, but I was glad I could help." At least she hoped she helped. Looking around at the shop in its lull, and there was much straightening and stocking to do.

Pressing her lips together, she stopped thinking that way. This was not her store, and she collected her things before she followed the proprietress to the suggested tea. "You have a very lovely store, Mistress. My brothers are very glad you chose Plumes of Blooms as one of your suppliers. The connection with your prestigious business is wonderful."

The moment the words were out of her mouth, Ginny wished she could swallow them back again. It was not as if it were not true, but it certainly made her sound like a sycophant. If she did not get a handle of herself, she feared her mouth would get carried away and she would sound like the most dimwitted admirer that most people called the Watch to have carried away.

No, she would put rein upon her thoughts and speak when spoken to until she felt more herself. It was hard when following the petite woman who had taken the art of scent and heightened it to such levels. It was as if a painter were standing in the same room with Prugadrian, whom she learned since living here had the same standing in her parents' world as da Vinci to others. Well, when one is faced with such a master of arts, one does not prattle on, she told herself.

The empath's regard was ascertaining, but her smile gentle as she led the young woman to a seat at the counter where she kept a constant supply of fresh tea and coffee, along with a small tray of delicate cookies-- usually madelaines and margarites. She deftly poured two cups and took a seat as well with a small sigh of relief slipping unbidden from her lips. "That was a bit insane if I must admit. Thy timing was impeccable, Ginny."

"I was very glad to be of help, ma'am." Ginny's smile broke free of its own accord. "It's the season with all the parties and gift giving. We won't see such a sight until just the day before. Fresh poinsettias and bright roses to add to greenery gathered from the woods. My brothers handle it all, but there is two of them. On their own, I am sure they would never be as calm as you are."

The empath's laughter spilled freely, light and warm. "I am glad I at least appeared to be calm." She set the mug in front of Ginny along with a small tray with the usual tea compliments. "I am so relieved thou hast some flowers left for me during this crush time. If thy brothers handle most of the customers at thy shoppe, may I ask what thou dost do there?"

"Thank you, ma'am" She whispered as she collected the cup and just before she sipped, she giggled. "Handle my mother?" On the heels of it she blanched. "Oh, do forgive me, I mean, I do arranging most in the back and assist my mother with her care of our hot house plants."

Eless nearly choked on her first sip of tea; luckily she hadn't actually drunk it yet. Amusement and mischief sparkled in her eyes over the rim of her cup. "Oh, I see." There was definitely no judgment in her tone, only mirth tugging at the corners of her lips. "That definitely sounds like the more fun part. The actual flower arranging, not the parental management," she explained with a merry wink.

"Oh, yes, ma'am. I do enjoy it. My father used to say I had an eye for it, but he was often over kind to me." The young woman's eyes dropped to the tea once more and she took a sip, then a thoughtful tilt of her head. "I do like this blend. Have you added a touch of bitter apple to it?" She was not quite sure, as the other spices were trying to toy with her senses and added, "Well, it is very good. Your own blend?"

She nodded. "Aye, some bitter apple with warm spices. It seems thy palate is as keen as thy nose. I am glad thou dost enjoy it, but I can nay claim the blend as my own. Just one I picked up at a little tea and spice shop in the market, Fire and Spice." There was a nearly imperceptible arch of her brow and the empath sensed the topic of the woman's father was too sensitive to probe. At least for now. "Dost thou have a favorite flower?" The reasons for asking such would hopefully reward the parfumeuse with some intimate knowledge of the person behind the composed demeanor.

"Oh my," Ginny breathed out at the question, but there was a smile there, just bursting with delight in every image she drew up in her minds eye. "I am quite fond of calla lilies, oh and white roses, and foxglove, and purple irises ..." she laughed a little. "I fear I have too many favorites, but pressed, I would have to say irises. Or, no maybe calla lilies." A roll of blue-green eyes at her inability to choose a favorite.

"I believe if I had the luxury of a greenhouse and all those choices, 'twould be difficult for me to choose as well," Eless responded understandingly. She paused for a sip, enjoying the breath of freshness that seemed to surround Ginny. A nice contrast to the stuffy old biddies and panicked boyfriends that had thronged the shoppe earlier. "Is it the colours or the shapes or the scents even, that lead to thy preference?"

A thoughtful sip of the tea, and the budding floral designer put determined thought to analyzing her likes. "I think for some it is the scent, and for others the shape, and others the color. Calla lilies have such an interesting shape, just the feel of them so strong yet fragile. Irises have colors in such beautiful blends, have you ever seen an iris look poorly in an arrangement or in a lady's hair, or even on a hat? I cannot think of a time I have. And roses, white roses, from baby to elderly lady, white roses are both cute and dignified. Would you not agree?" she questioned, her eyes wide and wondering what the lady thought.

"I have all three in my little garden out back. They each have such unique and striking beauty." Her head tilted slightly. "Although, I believe I may have given irises short shrift until now." She chuckled warmly. "Not too many of the Calla lilies have fragrance, but the ones I selected just had to be a scented variety. 'Tis a wonder the peafowl do nay faint from an aromatic assault on their poor senses!" More chuckles were interspersed with her sipping. "Thou dost seem to have an interest in more than just arranging and cultivating flowers, Ginny. May I ask how deep it doth lie?"

There was not even the beat of hesitation. Something about the woman, the shop, the openness of it, no scolding or ridiculing, she just felt so free and easy. "My father was an herbalist where we come from. He spent days in the fields, and I've known sprigs of lavender to mugwort since I was very little. Mother loves flowers and treats them like little people. And they can have that effect can't they? They just can make a moment seem better or brighter, a scent can bring happy memories, or even sad. They keep people we hold dear close even when they are gone." A little ashamed of herself, she ducked her head. "I'm sorry, I just think there is more to them than being a plant with a happy scent. Mix them correctly and you can heal someone. That's powerful."

"Yes!" was Eless' whispered encouragement. She nodded as she listened, eyes sparkling with excitement; a rush of ideas flitting rapid fire in her mind. "My mother was a healer and herbalist as well. 'Tis how I started and somehow it hath grown into this." She swept an upturned palm at the main salon of the shoppe. The empath tilted her head to one side, regarding Ginny thoughtfully. "I can imagine 'tis nay much opportunity to create along those lines, because people tend to be more visual when it doth come to floral arrangements, aye?"

"Yes, ma'am. I can still sneak an herb or two in there, something to reach the senses even without them knowing at times. I do worry that perhaps I should not, but so far none have complained." There was a bright, if brief, laugh to that and a blush of impishness to the young woman's cheeks.

"I bet it doth make them a return customer," added with a sage nod with a quiet chuckle.

Ginny countered, "May I ask, ma'am, do you have a favorite flower?"

"Aye, I do. 'Tis the simple little freesia blossom. Forgotten amongst showier blooms, but its scent is delicate and memorable." Her eyes shone as she spoke. "'Tis able to blend with so many other notes as well."

"How true. A good freesia is very delicate to grow as well. As you know, of course." Very glad she stopped herself on that one, talking to the woman as if she did not know her trade. Ginny almost pinched herself for being so foolish. "It is a lovely scent. It suits you, too, if you do not mind me saying. Stands on its own or beautifully blending with others to enhance their own virtues, rather like you do with some of your more...incorrigible customers?"

The shoppe's owner laughed freely and outright. "Thou didst pick up on that already, hmm? I noticed how thou didst quite deftly turn some to a more suitable choice." She nodded her approval and appreciation."'Twas quite skillful."

"Yes, well, I simply could not let Mrs. Treaton think she could wear peasblossom. Could you imagine?" She looked to the ceiling as if amused at the image that conjured.

"Definitely not! Too delicate to work with the soaps she favors to launder with!" She filched a cookie from the tray and nibbled it slowly. "They just do nay seem to think their ideas entirely through."

"It can be difficult, of course, to realize that a particular scent you favor can be completely squelched beneath the power of another, or lye. Lands sake, no one seems to think lye has any effect at all, but it has a powerful scent in its own right, and so stringent. But no, let's just sprinkle some rose water on the pillows, that will solve it". Her laughter sang out like a robin's song.

The empath grew to like this young woman more and more as their conversation progressed. Her easy laughter and quick wit were very refreshing. Eless refrained from adding how many just added perfume instead of bathing regularly, although the thought did pop randomly into her head. "I am certain 'tis similiar in thy shoppe. Sometimes a contrast of shapes and colors can be stunning and other times 'tis simply a riotous mess."

"Oh, you would not believe, ma'am, the things sometimes people ask for. My brother is very good at steering them clear of it, but one man was not to be put off. Pineapples and carnations. Can you imagine? I had to go to the green grocers and buy pineapples and try my best to arrange the fanfare carnations around them." Ginny did realize she was starting to get a little too free with her words, and she settled down a little. "Well, as you know, sometimes they cannot be put off, but pleasing them is best."

"Pineapples and carnations?" So much for lady-like demeanor, the elfess nearly spewed her tea at that. "Oh by the heavens!" When her laughter calmed down, she eased her way into her next line of questioning. "So, dost thou spend the entire day working at thy family's place?"

"Not the entire day, ma'am. I go over the books with my brothers once a week, we are closed, as you know, on Mondays. Inventory and arrangements, and I get some free time that day. Then mornings on days we are open to do general arrangements. Most of my time is my own to help wherever I can."

Eless tapped her lower lip."What dost thou like to do in thy free time, Ginny?" She had noticed her lingering when she brought the deliveries and how the young woman seemed to enjoy exploring the parfumerie.

"When the weather is fine, I like to take walks in the woods and fields. The hot house is wonderful and it does keep the plants so well, but there is nothing like the scent of wild growing things. I like to make nosegays in my travels. It's like a puzzle to piece together just the right items. When the weather is more like this, I read and cook a little, and paint a little more than I do than when the weather is good."

"It doth sound wonderfully relaxing! I still enjoy finding "prizes" in the fields and woods. There is just something a bit more... rich...rewarding...when 'tis found in nature, methinks." She listened attentively. The young woman was charming, intelligent and well-spoken as well. All positive attributes. "Well, Ginny. I owe thee a debt of thanks for jumping in and saving me from drowning in a sea of angry customers. What wouldest thou say to getting the opportunity to create a signature scent for thyself? Some day this week, mayhaps? I would be more than happy to allow thee free rein of my work room."

She smiled, eyes widened with delighted surprise. "Oh, ma'am, I would dearly love to. I am, well," her hand trembled a little and she set down the teacup quite unsure of herself for a moment. Ginny continued, "That is so very kind of you. Yes, please. Should I call in two days?" and she realized how eager that sounded. "Or whenever you think best."

"Two days would be fine, Ginny". The petite elfess had ulterior motives. She truly wanted to thank the woman for her help, but she also wanted to see more of her natural talent. If she could tempt her to spend more time at ~Heart Notes~, all the better. She needed an assistant -- someone talented. Ginny seemed to have a wealth of it naturally. "Whenever thy family can do without thine assistance will be fine. I can always carve out some time for us and if a customer should arrive, thou wouldest be spared from my hovering." She laughed softly.

"I find it hard to believe you ever hover, ma'am, but I would be glad of your guidance. A scent of my own. My mother would never believe."She laughed and stood. "I fear I should be getting back. Thank you for the tea, ma'am, and the conversation."

"Oh, 'twas my pleasure. I enjoyed thy company very much." The empath rose as well, her smile lighting her face and eyes. "Please apologize to thy family for my keeping thee so long from thy duties and thank thee for the flowers on such short notice. I know I can always rely on thy family in a crush."

"They will be pleased to hear it, and not to mind the time. I am," Ginny paused and took a breath, then finished with a soft voice, "rather sure they did not notice." She made her way to the door, pulling on her coat and pinning her hat in place once more. "Until next time."

The faintly spoken remark did not go unnoticed, but Eless did not comment on it. So many ideas! So much potential! Her mind was racing as she waved cheerfully and bid her farewells. "Until then, Ginny! Do nay let them force thee to mix pineapples and carnations!"

There was a wave and a laugh in that parting and the young Hilliard lass made her way back to her family's shop.

Heart Notes Parfumerie's newest limited edition fragrance, Benson Boulevard: Afternoon, captures an afternoon spent shopping on Benson Boulevard, the birthplace of RhyDin fashion located in the New Haven district of the city. It is a unisex fragrance with delicate fruit and floral notes that are contrasted with a bit of tart and spice upon opening. It then proceeds to a warm heart that is reminiscent of sunny, open air lunches at outdoor cafes and visiting various shoppes. A complex base is filled with rare woods and spices - reflective of the exotic blend of culture unique to this city. Only one bottle of the eau de parfum version is available (to be auctioned) and it is in a glass lined, silver bottle that is crafted to look like a shopping bag with the initial B on it. Two dozen bottles of the eau de toilette version will be available for a short time only in crystal bottles etched with a double "B". All proceeds go to charity.

The different notes in this fragrance include, but are not limited to:

Top: vinyl accord, red poppy buds, silk blossoms, ylang-ylang, black currant, rhubarb, plum and pink peppercorn.

Heart: patchouli, olibanum, lavender, coffee, tuberose.

Base: cashmere woods, agarwood (oud) myrrh, labdenum, suede.

RhyDin In Technicolour

This is the second unique offering in Heart Notes Parfumerie's RhyDin inspired fragrances. This unisex eau de parfum is custom crafted by Elessaria Devabriel herself in celebration of the diverse denizens of our city.

The fragrance opens with a light, citrus air that is grounded with subtle spices. As it develops, one can detect a hint of fruit blended with a touch of floral and more spices. The dry down's base notes evoke that mysterious "Je ne sais quoi" quality that is reflective of most of RhyDin's inhabitants.

This exclusive fragrance comes in an exquisite, multi-coloured, hand-blown, glass bottle trimmed in real 24karat gold.

RhyDin In Technicolour
contains the following (but is not limited to) notes:

Top notes: green mango, cyclamen, amalfi lemon, cardamon, bergamot, petit grain.

Middle notes:
honey, saffron, raspberry, chamomile, ginger, African orange flower, jasmine.

End notes:
almond, tobacco, coriander, opoponax, Oud (agarwood).

"Hello?" The front door at Heart Notes opened and Ebon poked his head inside. "Elessaria?" Stepping through and into the shop, he inhaled deeply, taking in the diverse scents as he always did upon entering the parfumerie. It wasn't a regular pleasure, so he made the most of it when he was able.

"May I help you?" It wasn't Elessaria, but one of her assistants.

Knowing that this was going into the busy season for her, what with gift-giving holidays fast approaching, Ebon took it in stride that Elessaria herself wasn't around. Probably either recovering from the Inn last night or working on a project in the back. He smiled to the young woman and held up a box that he was carrying. "Yes! I was wondering if you could see that Elessaria gets this. There's a note there, explaining what it is." He set the box down gently on a countertop. "Let her know that it's from Ebon, to put her at ease." With another smile, he turned and made his way back out the door, pausing just before leaving to take another whiff of the aromas within.

The note, once opened, reads as follows:

Elessaria,

My dear friend, seeing you at the Inn last night reminded me that I had a surprise for you. The contents of this box include a number of spices, scented oils, and dried blossoms from my homeworld... specifically, from the desert city of Rahyim where I lived for many years and still maintain a residence. While some of them may be similar to materials that you work with regularly, I thought that a little variation might prove inspiring.

I also have a favor to ask of you... I would like to commission a scent from you, as a gift to Phen for our next anniversary. There's no rush, it's not until the summer, but I thought the extra time might help us come up with something she would like. She doesn't wear scents often, and I don't want to pry too deeply so as not to spoil the surprise. I was thinking of something reminiscent of Rhy'din from the rooftops in spring, when the wind brings the scent of pines and cedars down from the mountain forests to the north, blending it with a hint of the sea spray and the flowers from trees and gardens across the city. Any suggestions?

Yours in friendship,
Ebon Ilnaren

Kruger had made this journey before, but certainly not for the same reasons. Then it had been a delivery, and while he used that as his reason for needing to leave the shop today, it was far from truth. There were deliveries to make, one in particular was going to prove the most difficult, but that was after this stop off.

Was it wrong to use deception in this way? Kruger honestly wasn’t sure. Had he mentioned to S’jira that he was stopping by the parfumerie, he was sure she would have wanted to come along. While this was condition was usually most looked forward too, it did tend to make arranging gifts difficult. Perhaps he shouldn’t consider this to be a lie then but a truth omitted by necessity that will be divulged at a later and more appropriate time. He tried to tell himself this over and over again, but it still felt like a lie. He had promised that there would be no more of those. Not out loud mind, but since the Winterfest ball, where he had held back from her his true feelings on what the Panther’s disappearance meant to him, he had kept nothing from her. Like this however some things required the appropriate time, or company.

He invented reasons to be alone with her in those moments where the crowds would be at their most imposing. She was usually grateful for them; crowds seemed to leave her with many apprehensions. The brought a stress to her face that he found difficult to bear. Short of dispersing the crowds he was powerless against them. His fabricated reasons were gifts to her for enduring his own passion for the crowd. He was sure she knew his reasons were simply to keep her comfortable. She had chanced to see his antics one evening when he hadn’t expected her to make it to the dueling arena. S’jira had rightly told him that he took much pleasure from the cheers and jeers of those in attendance.

Kruger really didn’t understand why these thoughts were forefront as he made his way to Heart Notes. He had heard that Eless could be commissioned to make scents specific to people. S’jira’s birthday was some time away, months in fact, but Kruger wanted to give Eless as much time as possible to create this one scent. To his way of thinking, it was the only perfect scent.

The door swung easily inward, and he stepped through into the store front. The counter seemed to be abandoned temporarily, though it was nearing lunch time. He supposed that he could have timed this visit better, but he tended to be a creature of impulse. Kruger looked around before calling out. “Is there anyone here?”

Heart Notes Parfumerie was not far from her aunt's jewelry shop in New Haven. Maggie headed over to make a somewhat formal request of Eless. She set an envelope on the counter that was addressed to Lady Elessaria Devabriel in neatly scripted handwriting. Inside on lilac scent note paper was the following message:

Dear Miss Elessaria,

I am hoping that you or someone on your staff would be willing to help with the Children's Day festivities at Hatton Point this year on 17 and 18 April. One of the venues has to do with plants and gardening. I hope that you might be able to tell the kids about how perfume scents are made from plants and flowers. If you have a different idea that might help, please let me know.

Thank you,

Mairead Harker

Owner and Master Parfumeuse, Elessaria Devabriel, has created a unique, custom-couture fragrance named Lunar Gold for this special occasion. The scent then transitions to capture the golden warmth of the last sunset, only to linger on one's skin like a lover's caress.

Lunar Gold contains the following (but is not limited to) the following notes:

Opening accords: green tea flower, dewberry, moonflower, juniper berries
Heart accords: lady of the night, sideritis (mountain tea), French labdanum, wrightia
Base accords: saffron, light and dark amber, cyperus scariosus, galbanum, sichuan pepper

This singular eau de parfum is decanted in a bottle crafted by highly talented, Ethan Kaiser of Kaiser Glassworks.

Many, many thanks to all who helped and encouraged me with this return to a part of my play/writing which I truly enjoy. Also, continued thanks to Ethan's player for our continued "canon" of working together all these years!
XO
