Howdy citizens of Rhy'Din! It's that time of year again when the leaves are starting to turn, the days are getting shorter, and the temperatures are getting chilly. Summer is officially over. BOO!

But look, there are all of these pumpkins around and something should be done with them. To them. Head on over to Orktoberfest to do some decorating, but here at the Botanical Garden we're gonna fling 'em!

You heard right. Fling. Them. With giant wooden siege machines for no other purpose than to see how far they can go! Huzzah!

Where is this madness happening?

Rhy'din Botanical Gardens

When is it?

Friday October 12th and Saturday October 13th*

Contestants will need to construct their own trebuchet or use one provided by the contest in order to hurl a 6-8lb pumpkin.

Sieges engines may be made from wood, with a steel axle. Counterweights can be steel or sand. Weights will be available for use.

No magic, electronics, or any sort of propulsion systems may be used, including for the crank or winch (if used). This is a feat of physics!

Only one entry per contestant. Teams are allowed.

3 attempts will be measured and averaged for a final score.

The highest score wins!

What about the little ones?

Right. Because some parents might not approve of their children operating large, dangerous equipment, there will be much smaller sling shots set up to hurl mini pumpkins. Huzzah! Sorry, no competition with this one, it's just for fun.

Prizes will be announced soon.

So how about it, let's get chunky!

This will be a hybrid live and board event. The live event will be Saturday the 13th from 9PM EST on, held in the Southern Glen chat on Blab.

The board will be open for people who cannot/do not want to participate in the live event until the live event ends, so that a winner can be announced that night. Posts for people not participating in the competition have no time limit.

1d20 dice will be used to determine distance. 3 attempts and the points will be averaged to get a final score. Blab has a dice roller built into chat (the command is /roll 1d20 ) and it will be used for scoring. If you are unable to participate in the live event and want to use the chat dice roller, go for it. If you want to use another dice roller, go for it. I will trust that people will be honest. Just post your rolls somewhere in your board post and please include at the end the final score.

Individual scores of "1" will result in a catastrophic failure. How you wish to play this is up to you, but think exploding pumpkins, rogue throws, etc. Have fun with this!

Any questions can be PMed to this account or to Sira on Blab. Thanks!

Colleen, the youngest pair of children in her brood, and a bunch of grandchildren along for the ride were out to enjoy some time together.

As he put together the wooden parts of the trebuchet on site, "Gran," Rick Harker said, "I still say steel would be better for weights." Wooden pegs instead of screws were fitted into holes to join boards together.

"You think like a modern builder." Collie grinned at her grandson.

Maggie, Rick's oldest sister laughed. "You've never been pelted with wet sandbags. Have you?" Maggie had taken charge of her cousin, Brian Tur Gairdin, who was surveying the scene from his stroller while his older brother and sister, Alinar and Colleen helped Rick.

Meanwhile, Cate, the middle Harker child, was busy picking out a pumpkin with her pint sized aunt. "Abby, that one will make a good pie, put it aside. We don't want to squash it."

Madison, Abby's twin, was already hefting a 20 lbs. pumpkin on her own. "Look out! Kid with a pumpkin!" She waddled over to the rest of the group and set the pumpkin on the ground. The giant pumpkin was being saved for later.

It was a good day!

"No, I am not making you a trebuchet, I have things I need to do today," Jackie informed her little bratbrother. Desdenova eyed her, scowling. Jackie was decking out full on Gothic Lolita for some classic car show and party instead of flinging pumpkins into the sky to splatter wherever. Girls were so crazy sometimes.

But where there was a will, there was a way.

Desdenova carefully dragged the timbers and beams along with plans from the barn to lay on the driveway in front of Jackie's little convertible. He made himself scarce, waiting...

Jackie stopped short, ridiculously floofy and frilled in a black and maroon confection of lace and damask, towering on a pair of stacked heel Mary Janes. Her eye twitched. Her hands curled into lacy gloved fists. Somewhere, a mournful cowboy meeting cowboy tune warbled off-key.

Jackie growled as she peeled off her gloves. There was nothing else to be done, she got down to work knocking out the trebuchet. The activity attracted their father, who randomly re-designed the rig on the fly, giving it a bit more zing to its swing.

"It's not fair that I have to build things when they're in front of me," Jackie complained. Jack chuckled in return.

"Now, now. It's not that bad. You could end up having to plant things even in the cold of winter."

"But it doesn't ever get that cold here."

"No, but it sure does at the RhyDin house," Jack reminded her with a serene smile. Jackie's bright green eyes lit up. It always warmed Jack's heart to see such innocent evil in his kids.

Once the trebuchet was done, Jackie skipped off to her show, leaving Desdenova to transport the fifteen foot tall war machine. The easiest way was to simply teleport it, though he would have to carve open an opening to push it through.

Except, Desdenova was in a hurry. He wanted to get there Friday, but...

On cutting open the door to transport the trebuchet, he found himself in the clamor and madness of battle. He stood, stunned, his mouth hanging open, as six strapping men in Celtic clothing took charge of his trebuchet and put it to good use against their enemy.

Daisy appeared promptly, a glossy black pony, and to her shock, she was also commandeered for the cause. The nightmare found a big Celt on her back, urging her on to glorious battle. Baffled, the gaunt took off running into the fray.

Desdenova scurried wildly out of the immediate carnage, finally swarming into the lower limbs of a willow. He caught his breath and calmed himself, then quietly went over his earlier spell. He muttered, realizing where he'd gone wrong.

But how the heck was he going to get his trebuchet back from the celts? They were having a smashing good time lobbing stones at a Roman fort. Not to mention they were big, and he was small, they were armed and he only had his scalpels and small pistol. Using magic would get him into all sorts of trouble.

To make matters worse, the Romans managed to get their ballista on the wall and fired a few bolts into Jackie's trebuchet, splitting one of the main beams. Desdenova's jaw fell open. As he watched, however, the Celtics yanked the bolt from the beam and splinted it with a length of board and rope. Once more, it was zinging stones the size of pumpkins into the fort.

Someone called a charge, and the Celts manning Jackie's trebuchet abandoned it to join the other men rushing to meet the Romans. Daisy finally manged to ditch her rider and swung back around to meet Desdenova before he could get to the trebuchet.

"No, wait!" Desdenova yelped just as Daisy wisped them both away.

So, Desdenova arrived for Saturday's pumpkin' chunkin', wearing an orange Jack O' Lantern shirt and jeans, sadly trebuchet-less. But he'd go ahead and claim one of the ones already there, and grabbed some goodies while he waited for Nile to show up.

Pumpkin Chunking seemed safer than the pumpkins as boats, Mist decided as he drove his wagon drawn by his horses, Steven and Greg, to the scene of the pumpkining. He didn't actually know what it meant to pumpkin chunk, but it didn't involve a lake, so it couldn't be all that bad. The botanical gardens were gorgeous. He spent a good deal of time just walking through the space and enjoying the plants.

Mist eyed the war machines a trifle uneasily, but as he saw them loaded up with pumpkins, he got the idea. He gathered up a drink and settled on the sidelines to watch the flying to pumpkins, cheering and clapping as they flew and squished.

Afterwards, he would cheerfully abscond with as many pumpkins as he could get into the wagon, because pumpkins are delicious and make really good pies.
