I am Trevor Bergen Dragonbane. Son of Huma Dragonbane and Aja Bird.

My father, is an average sort of guy. Not very exciting really. Just goes about his quiet life on a farm.

My mother? Now. That's another story. She's a sailor. A pirate, really. She is much more than that, but if ya asked her, that's what she would say. She's a pirate.

To me, she's mom. Or, depending on how much of a prankster she wants to be on any given day, MOTHER.
Said very loudly with the accompanying rolling eyes. Also a sigh. Very important when that combination is in play. Have to have the sigh or it doesn't give it the right umph. That's what she told me during a particularly annoying day in my teenage years. I meant to annoy her, but somehow, that never worked out so well. She just knew things.

Knew when we needed a good arse kicking or when we needed something else. Mara, my sister, and I always knew she was different than other mothers. Our friends would complain about theirs. Too overprotective, too nagging, wouldn't let them go here or there. The only place Mara and I were forbidden from going alone to was RhyDin City. Otherwise, we were free to go where we wanted as long as we were home by the time she asked.

Maria took care of the house and the cooking. She was like a grandmother. We really had no idea she wasn't family until we were older. She is family. Just not blood family. We didn't ever realize the difference growing up. Mom didn't make those sort of distinctions. We had Aunts, Uncles, cousins.. It never occurred to any of us that it wasn't a blood relationship with those labels, it simply was.

Like going to Colleen's house. It was a magical place, full of people and love. Always something going on there, someone always making really good food, there were horses to ride, animals to care for and play with, forests to run through. Miss Colleen makes the greatest brownies. Don't tell Maria, ok? It would hurt her feelings.

Our own house, is large, but comfortable. Which is good. Because when mom adopted Hochi, we started to have more pets in the house. Aside from Peanut the monkey and Merlin the cat. We wound up with Lenny the beagle and Scamp the.. well. I don't know what kind of dog my sister has. But it chews my socks if it gets a hold of them. Then came turtles, a couple litters of kittens, some puppies, a llama (and we still don't know where Hochi found that.) several chickens whose numbers decline suspiciously before a BBQ. We have a parrot that yapped so much, mom took it to the yards. Now it still talks all day, just with more swearing.

I don't live there now, I live above the bar, but my mother keeps my room for me there. If she goes on a business trip, she always brings me something back and tells me to check my room for it. I try to tell her my room is here in the Dragon's Lair but she just smiles, and goes about her things.

As I tend the bar that once belonged to my parents, I hear stories about all kinds of people and places. Those who don't know I'm her son, often speak about my mother. It's in these stories I learn all about the amazing adventures she has been on, and the people that she has helped and gotten rid of.

She keeps that all to herself. If you asked her, she's just a shipyard owner who happens to look after a charming beachside village. If you ask other people, the answers you get would sometimes shock you. I know they have me.

I'm a businessman. A barkeep, a brother and a friend. Most importantly, I'm a son of a sailor. And these are my stories

Siblings--

I have Mara, Hochi and Noah. Of the three, I think that Hochi is the closest to my mother in means of personality and interests. Which is sort of curious since he is adopted. Not that I distinguish this as being important.

He’s so much like her, it's scary to watch them work together. Take the case of the mini tank brainstorming session that they’ve been on since yesterday. They came into the bar with Calix, late last night, talking rather excitedly about this mini tank build they apparently had started talking about at the Inn in RhyDin.

Mother has a habit of getting an idea and then running with it. It’s fun to watch if she doesn’t drag you into it. Working with my mother, at least for me, is difficult. But not for the reasons you would think.

It's the way she just expects that you are smart enough to keep up with her pachinko brain. That you know what she knows. I could live to be a thousand and still not know all the things she knows. Nor, would I fully understand what my mother is thinking. I adore the woman, but she is like a five year old on a sugar high.

"We could armor plate the bottom.." Hochi was saying.

"Right, protect the tanks from puncture." mom replied taking notes, Cal, stood off to the side and caught my eyes and gave me one of those "She’s your mother" smiles. I smiled back and leaned there watching the pair draw and take notes.

"So, how do we protect the tanks without adding weight?"

"We met that scientist guy, Bismark speaks to. We can see if he has something to protect the tanks that will be lightweight."

"And tough."

"Yeah." Aja moved the sheet around and doodled some more. "If we make the casing hard shell""

"If it’s fired upon"" Hochi started.

"Ricochet rabbit!" Mom"s answer was enthusiastic. I looked towards Cal again.

"Is she always like this?" I asked. If anyone knew my mother well enough it was Cal.

"Always when she gets an idea into that plinko mind of hers." Came the rather monotoned reply from Calix.

"And you just deal with her? How?" I’m amazed at anyone's ability to handle my mother and her antics.

"I"ve gotten used to her antics and way she thinks. It’s easier to just go with the flow than to try and change her." Glancing towards Hochi and Aja.

"Ah, the go with the flow theory of sailing." I smiled at the man. "Don’t fight the currents, just ride them." I gave him a smile.

"Pretty much." A slight nod as Calix looked back to Trevor.

"Then we could add a couple of the light weight phaser guns." Hochi nodded at mom.

"Or the ion cannon."

"That would be heavy."

"True." she said. "Maybe we can make it heat up pizza!"

"I think that"s mom"s signal that she wants food." Hochi looked at me and I laughed.

"Yes. I will go start up a pizza."

"SCORE!" Mom"s arms went up like a referee at a football game. "Foood!"

I chuckled all the way into the kitchen as I heard her and Hochi return to the discussion of the mini tanks. Yep. This was my family and I love them. .

Adventures

"I swear on my mother's grave that it’s true." one sailor was saying to another.

"Can"t be." the other man said. "They are a powerful clan. If someone were targeting them, they would win."

"Not true. Someone has been systematically taking out the members one by one. Their numbers dwindle steadily."

I learn things standing behind the bar. Things I have never had the guts enough to ask my mother about. Like now.

These men are speaking of the Quistguard Clan. Known far and wide as slavers, gypsies and thieves.I’ve heard it more since owning the bar, but I also know their name was brought up once in front of me when I was a kid, the look on her face stuck with me. It was that same look she would get seconds before I"d receive a slap to the back of my head for back talking her.

An unspoken rule exists with my mother and her "business trips". Do not ask. If they are unimportant run of the mill supply trips, she will speak of them but, if they are something more. Details will not be forthcoming. Over the years, she would be injured upon her return from some of these business trips. Maria would press for details that my mother would dodge. At least while either me or Mara were around. We were protected from such stories.

The few years I’ve owned the bar, I have heard far more than I ever knew existed. In the stories that are starting to be called the downfall of the clan, my mothers name is mentioned often. I know she has something to do with the reason they are losing their control, but the reasons why she would be in the center of this are yet to be told.

((posting under Aja's name until I figure out what happened to Trevors log in-- Also edited several times to address weird symbols showing up))

My mother... If you met her, I don't have to tell you she's one of a kind. But it's the things she doesn't say sometimes that speak the loudest as to how I see her.

I watch her when she thinks I'm not looking. I see the depth of how much she loves the people around her. She says it, always with a smile or makes a little joke... But she proves it in the small things.

The way she gently handles Rico when he's had a little much to drink, the way she will move a box of tissues towards someone having a bad day, the discreet payment of a bar tab of some down on their luck traveler. The way she will not respond to some negative comment because she somehow understands the reason behind it and doesn't feel the need to take it personal.

Even her "projects" -- all seem like one random experiment until they're done and she places people into the houses, turns over the item to someone that could honestly benefit from it or it somehow ends up benefiting the town at large.

It's a hundred tiny things -- all go unnoticed by and large, and unless you really stop to look at what she does, you will truly believe that she has no idea what she's doing. It took me years to fully grasp who she is. And I'm still learning.

I am proud to be the son of a sailor. If I end up with even half of a list of accomplishments that she's pulled off, I will consider that a life well led.
