Xenograg steps into the door and simply says, "Well?"

"I'm ready, I'm here!" comes the agitated response from Amanda. She lays the strap of the bag on her shoulder and scurries towards the door. Xenograg steps aside to let her through, then follows. Alais of Nitesong is waiting in the front room.

"We are now ready, my friend," Xenograg announces to Alais. At long last, Xenograg is going to Matlal. Alais has asked for his help concerning the trees. As Xenograg's daughter and apprentice, Amanda is coming along for the experience.

Alais? silvery eyes held a touch of merriment watching Amanda. ?Yer aboot tae gae tae a place verra few haff been lassie. Th? ?omeland o? dragons.?

Alais reached for Xenograg?s arm, bidding Amanda take her father?s arm as well before she used the Annaran spell that allowed her to travel between worlds. Time fell away and had no meaning during the transport. Images blurred and ran together like watercolors in the rain, except that they did not run downward, but spread out like there was no gravity to pull the raindrops any particular direction.

They came out of the timeless riot of color to stand on a black sand beach with the sound of surf gently lapping against the shimmering obsidian beach. A verdant hill rose before them, quite a steep angle, and it was covered in lush grasses and dotted with myriad colors of flowers. Some recognizable, some very unique and never seen beyond the island.

Cresting the hill stood an imposing stone structure that was clearly not finished, but well along in its progress. Several dragons could be seen circling above the structure, and within moments, they were greeted by a very large dragon. ?Lady Alais, welcome home,? Garl?s head dipped in a gesture of courtesy before swinging toward Xenograg and Amanda and back to Alais, ?You have brought friends??

Alais nodded, ?Garl, I would like to introduce you to a very old friend, Xenograg, and his daughter, Amanda. I have asked his assistance in figuring out why the trees will not grow.? She turned toward Xenograg and his daughter, ?Please meet my most constant friend and companion here on Matlal, Garl. His name is truly unpronounceable, so he?s allowed me to shorten it.? She gave them an impish smile before beginning the climb toward the crest of the hill.

At Garl's approach, Amanda pales and instinctively slips behind her father. Despite his years in Rhydin, Xenograg also feels intimidated. He controls the irrational impulse and greets the dragon.

"It is an honor to finally meet you, Garl. Alais frequently speaks of you." Xenograg looks behind himself and almost growls a short phrase in a strange, tonal language. The words have an immediate effect of putting steel in Amanda's spine. She steps up beside her father and bows to Garl.

"Greetings, My Lord," she says with a tremor in her voice.

Garl landed, folded his wings and took a couple of steps toward the small group. His scales shimmered silvery in the sunlight as he lowered his head to be closer to them, "Welcome to Matlal friend of Alais, Sorcerer Xenograg of the Darelir clan."

His eyes slid toward the young girl then, "And to you young sorceress."

Alais tried to hide a smile as she watched Amanda. Garl was doing his best not to be intimidating, but she had to admit, that first face to face with one of the dragons leaves an indelible impression.

Alais glanced toward the top of the slope where the construction was ongoing, "Xenograg, the whole of the island looks as this does, it grows non-woody plants, and nothing more. "

Garl lifted his head and peered in the direction of three more dragons circling above the stone building. Then he looked at Alais and Xenograg. "If you would like to see it from the air, we can arrange that."

"Perhaps later, Garl," replies Xenograg. "The task at hand is of earth, so that is where we shall start." He turns to his apprentice. "Amanda, begin the preparations."

The teenage girl nods and lowers the bags she carries to the ground. She methodically removes two robes of forest green color. She pulls one over her head and secures it with a rope belt; the robe is ankle-length and has a hood. She takes up the other robe and carries it to Xenograg. She helps her master don the robe, and ties the rope belt around his waist. They raise the hoods of their robes in unison. Lastly, Amanda bends down and takes a long oaken wand from the bag.

"Ready, Master," Amanda says at last.

"Proceed," is Xenograg's command to her. She turns and walks towards an area of plants. Xenograg follows her in single file. She seeks a place where a tree should be, and soon finds one. Amanda looks to Xenograg for a cue, but he simply gestures for her to proceed on her own judgment. He stands behind her, observing everything with three eyes.

Alais had to hide a bit of a smile, she knew Xeno had a healthy respect for dragon kind, and apparently Amanda had learned the same from her sire.

As Amanda gave her father and mentor proper respect and unpacked the robes and wand, Alais stepped back to give them room. She wasn't certain what they were going to do, but Amanda clearly had something important in mind as she pulled the long oak wand.

Xenograg allowed her to proceed as she wanted to, and Alais reached for the ley lines of the island to keep in touch with what the girl was doing.

Garl lowered his head further to study the use of human magic.

Amanda digs up the tree seed with a hand shovel from her bag. She takes the seed between her palms and closes her eyes. She murmurs an incantation several times before turning to Xenograg with her findings.

"Father, this seed is still alive."

"Indeed?" is his reply.

"Yes. It is still dormant despite all the met conditions for germination."

"So...?" is Xenograg's leading question. Amanda smiles as she answers with enthusiam.

"So the problem is not with the seed but the ground!" Xenograg just gives her a critical look, and her smile vanishes. "Um...possibly. We must look at more seeds."

"Very good," Xenograg judges. Amanda has realized her conclusion is premature, and that is the lesson of the moment. Xenograg expects her statement will be proven, but it must indeed be proven with sufficient evidence.

Amanda fills in the hole but keeps the seed. She stands and moves off to find another planting.

Amanda and Xenograg dig up three more tree seeds. All appear alive yet dormant.

"But why only the trees?" asks Amanda.

"When we understand that, we will likely have solved the problem," is Xenograg's conjecture.

"How shall we examine the earth?"

"Scrying is channeled through the senses,", Xenograg instructs. "Each element has a preferred sense. With air, it is sight; with water, taste. What of earth?" Amanda smiles as she remembers the answer from a previous discussion.

"Touch."

"Correct."

"So we should start with a magic circle." It was not a question, and Amanda begins looking for an appropriate location.

Alais stood separated from Xenograg and his daughter. She knew that her own arts were shadowed with her work in Annaran Necromancy, and for the time being, she needed to leave the two of them to explore and to study.

Who knew, they might find a clue, a hint, some tell tale bit of information that she had overlooked.

The Rouwan wood staff was held on her hand, and she drove the point down into the ground, putting her in touch with the ley energies there. She could feel the hum of Matlal, the ebb and flow of life, but it was subdued. It did not have the exuberance of life, perhaps that was why the trees would not grow.

She frowned as she felt the isle through the staff. There had to be a way to heal her island. Not for herself, but for all of the dragons that called it home.

After selecting a suitable spot, Amanda clears it of loose debris. Using her wand, Amanda encloses herself and Xenograg within two shallow rings in the dirt. Xenograg guides her drawing of the glyphs between the circles.

"Done?" she asks.

"Test it," is his instruction. Amanda nods and centers herself. She takes her time with the working, knowing the crucial importance of quality. With a labored exhale and upswinging arms, Amanda raises a ward from the magic circle. She feels momentarily drained, and sits down on the ground. After checking on his daughter's condition, Xenograg inspects her work. Like her, he takes his time.

"Well done, my girl," is his judgment. Amanda beams with pride. "Do you want to rest?" he asks, not as a test but in concern.

"No, I can continue. I want to," comes Amanda's reply without hesistation. Xenograg smiles and nods his assent.

"Very well. I will return in an hour or so." With that, Xenograg carefully steps out of the magic circle. Amanda's ward is a focusing one -- rather than interposing a boundary between within and without, it channels energy to the sorcerer within. Amanda should be able to sense the entire isle from where she sits.

"So are you going to let Amanda do everything?" is Alais's half-teasing question to Xenograg. They are standing on the porch of her house.

"Perhaps," is his retort. After a moment of silence, he continues. "Seriously, my skills are weak in both green magic and divination. With Amanda, they are strong."

"Both?"

"Yes. Her first manifestation was the Sight, in dreams. We shall see if she can summon it awake and at will." Xenograg takes a sip of fruit juice. He does not know what fruit it is from, but it is sweet and slakes his thirst.

"Didn't you tell me your old master was a seer?"

"Yes. Maret was the greatest of his time. I always felt myself a disappointment to him that I could not learn to See."

"He did not feel you were a disappointment, did he?"

"No, and he strove to get me to forgive myself."

"He succeeded," Alais reminds him. Xenograg smiles.

"Yes, though he did not live to see it." Xenograg sighs. "How I wish he were alive to advise me on teaching one who has the Sight."

Amanda eventually tires and cannot hold her concentration. She has been laying on her back within the circle, having found that more contact with the earth improves her sensing to a noticeable degree. Xenograg walks over when he sees her sit up.

"Tired?" he asks, and she simply nods. "Hungry, too, I expect," is his follow-on statement. Amanda realizes she is very hungry. She also notices it is late afternoon -- later than she expected it to be.

"I lost track of time," she admits.

"A very common occurrence. Come, Alais has arranged an early dinner." Amanda smiles at that, but then remembers the task at hand.

"What of the circle?"

"It will fade in time. I trust you can raise another?" he challenges. Amanda smiles again, this time in pride.

"Yes, I can." Xenograg smiles, too, and holds out his hand. Amanda stands and brushes some dirt from her clothes. She steps out of the circle and takes her father's hand. "I am hungry."

"I told Alais you would be," he replies, "and that you are a growing girl. She accused me of not feeding you enough, though, judging by your stature."

"Now I am embarrassed," she blushes. Amanda is petite and self-conscious about it. Xenograg puts one arm around his daughter as they walk to the house.

"Alais is fond of you. I think you impressed her when she visited Xenodar." Amanda nods but her smile fades. The disconcerting memory of Alais's lesson in necromancy is one Amanda will never forget.

"She told you?"

"No, but I hear it in her voice. Listen at dinner and see if you do as well." Amanda smiles again and nods. It is not another test, but a reminder to always pay attention.

Alais had left Xenograg and Amanda alone. She had become so lost in her circle and her contact with the ley lines that the young sorceress had lost track of everything around her. She would be hungry for dinner, and Alais headed for the nearly constructed public building. The exceptionally high ceilings and huge rooms were designed to make the dragons of Matlal comfortable inside. This place was built for them.

She passed through the vaulted central auditorium as Garl joined her. "Your guests embody a fair bit of magic." He adjusted his pace to walk beside her. Garl almost never took a humanoid form. The great dragon preferred to keep his native form.

Alais peered up at him, "Yes, Xenograg is more powerful than he is willing or comfortable admitting, and his daughter will be very strong in her own right. It's why I asked them to come. Xenograg has his own form of necromancy, but it is very different from my own. And Amanda has strengths he desires to see explored by her." She gave him a wry smile, "Once upon a time, Xenograg asked me to do a lesson for his daughter. I cannot imagine introducing her to what Morrin taught me."

Garl peered back at her, "Who better to introduce her to dangerous dark arts than an elf who has been there and not been seduced?"

Alais took a deep breath as she paused in front of a two story set of carven doors that opened into a wing of the commanding stone structure. "Garl, what I learned, what I have done is no fit magic to teach to any elf." Alais knew that the necromancy she knew was never intended for elves.

He held open the door and followed her through them, "Yet it was fit sorcery for you?" He kept his gaze straight ahead as they walked.

Alais stopped before a human sized door, one that led to her own private area of the structure. Her hand rested on the latch as she slowly looked up at Garl. "I would do the same again my friend. That does not make it fit for me, but what passed between Morrin and I is not open for discussion." This topic was at an end.

Garl inclined his head, "I will bring them here." He turned and made his way back down the hall to retrieve Xenograg and his daughter. Alais would entertain them with a meal in her own rooms. Someday he would get her to talk about the things that haunted her.

Garl headed back toward where Xenograg was offering his hand to his daughter. He paused well back from them as they spoke.

"Your friend is preparing a meal for you both. If you will follow me, I will take you to her." Garl knew his size and nature were intimidating, but Matlal was for Dragons. He swung his head in the direction of the huge stone building at the crest of the hill. "Alais is expecting you."

He gave Xenograg a toothed grin, "And as you are guests, you have no fear of becoming a snack here."

Garl folded his wings and lowered his head toward Amanda, "Are all elven females so petite?"

Garl meant no offense, but she seemed much smaller than Lord Momus' half elven daughter, and he guessed them to be approximately of similar age.

Alais walked into her suite, then out onto a small patio where a fountain gurgled cheerfully. Dinner would be here. She summoned her staff to her as she drew upon the ley lines of Matlal. The Isle was created by magic. It was held together by magic. Tass and Khirsah, and their sister were responsible for the existence of the archipelago. Tonight's sunset would be stunning.

The table and three chairs formed from the stone of the patio.

Alais then focused on conjuring the meal. Amanda would be ravenous after exerting so much energy as she had. She'd felt her find the ley lines, and the power that coursed through them here. Alais wondered if Amanda had ever felt that kind of power before.

The meal would need to replenish much of what she had expended and Alais smiled, there were elven foods that she could serve the girl, and even Xenograg would find them a delight.

The tea would be Eldarie, of course, and as Alais softly whispered elven words she hadn't used in many many years, the scent of flowers and spices surrounded her. The food was vegetarian, no flesh here. She closed her eyes as the fragrant dishes decorated the stone table. Colorful splashes of flowers blended with the vibrant greens and yellows of the meal.

The aroma of hot tea curled around the spiced dinner, giving a grace note of musk. These were the meals she knew when she lived in Nitesong. They were filled with the rich power of elven lands, the uniquely fortifying nutrients of elven realms. They would reinvigorate the girl as only elven cuisine could.

She could hear Garl's claw tap at her door. Alais turned and went to welcome Xenograg and Amanda into her home.

He watched her as she moved about the patio from one of the corners of her suite where the shadows folded over just a little more than they needed to. She would know he was there, if she paid attention, but he knew her mind was elsewhere, and so he simply waited, and watched.

The Younger should be here, dealing with these matters, but he was off, enjoying this new trist of a woman that he had entwined himself with. He felt it was only a matter of time before the Younger once more found his heart torn, and through this, he would not survive. The Younger was becoming much like their sister in this... but, perhaps the Eldest was as well?

He shook off such thoughts, shedding them like a snake does a skin. He found his gaze off, and he moved it to find Alais stepping towards the door as that insepid fool of a dragon tapped at the door.

Perhaps it was well that Garl choose not to assume the smaller forms. That would make this meal with the Lady d'Nitesong's friends less troublesome.

Alais paused just short of opening the door, she turned with a smile toward the shadows. "It is a pleasure to have you here milord Khirsah. It is my hope that you will you be staying for dinner this night."

She walked toward the shadow, offering her scarred hand as she did. "You would honor us if you would remain."

Alais called to the door, "Coming!"

Alais meets Xenograg and Amanda at the door and does not waste words.

"Xeno, an unexpected guest will also be joining us at dinner: Khirsah." Xenograg's eyes widen -- a reflex of great surprise in him. 'More than surprise,' Alais thinks. 'Trepidation.' She knows that Xenograg surreptitiously avoids Khirsah for reasons of his own.

"Who is Khirsah?" asks Amanda. Alais hesistates and looks to Xenograg. He does answer after taking a moment to choose his words.

"A very great lord among dragons." Amanda has noted the mood of the adults and holds any further questions she may have. Xenograg then recovers his poise. "There is nothing to be done," he says to Alais. "Let us not keep Khirsah waiting."

"Besides, I am hungry!" Amanda quips with a grin, seeking to lighten the tension. Xenograg and Alais both smile at the welcomed levity. Amanda lifts her chin and leads the way out of the foyer with faux confidence -- though she knows not where the meal is to be served.

Alais recognized the trepidation in Xeno's eyes at the news that the Elder would be joining them. She knew the reasons for it, but it would be good for Amanda to meet the Elder. It wasn't as if Khirsah would do anything to either of them, and in truth, Alais was more than pleased to have Khirsah surprise her with a visit.

When Amanda inquired who Khirsah was, she smiled, waiting to see what Xenograg would tell his daughter. She chuckled softly when he simply said that Khirsah was a 'very great lord among dragons.'

Amanda sensed the tension and announced that she was hungry and led the way inside with a confidence she did not truly feel.

Alais and Xenograg followed her as Amanda came to a halt, face to face with Khirsah. Alais inclined her head to the Elder, "M'lord Khirsah, may I introduce Xenograg and Amaltea's daughter, Amanda. Amanda, I am pleased to introduce you to Lord Khirsah Tavadon. He is Lord Tasslehofl's older brother." She motioned toward the patio where a soft gurgle indicated that a fountain splashed and played. "We will have our meal on the patio where you will see the sun set on our home Amanda. There is special magic in sunsets."

As they reached the patio, a shadow slid across the stones, Garl had taken wing, but his path altered abruptly upon seeing The Elder.

Alais indicated where Xeno and Amanda should be seated, "You must be very hungry Amanda."

"You must be very hungry, Amanda," Alais says.

"Very!" Amanda replies with a smile. She walks around the table and takes the furthest chair. With a gesture and another smile, she offers Khirsah the seat to her left and Alais the right; Alais's back is to the setting sun. Xenograg hides his approval of Amanda's arrangement as he sits down opposite her; Amanda can take cues from her father regarding any questions asked of her.

To Xenograg's relief, dinner passes smoothly. Khirsah appears to have no agenda to his visit; neither Xenograg nor Amanda receive any extra attention or probing questions.

Amanda's pretense of charm and the wariness beneath are swept away the instant she meets the Elder's gaze. His presence leaves her simply awed. She keeps her eyes lowered during the entire meal and speaks only when asked a question. Khirsah appears sympathetic to Amanda's plight, but does not let her completely withdraw from the conversations, either. Xenograg is thankful for Khirsah's discretion and impressed by his deft social touch.

At one point, Khirsah asks Amanda what she thinks of the Red Dragon Inn.

"I cannot say as I have been inside but once and briefly," is her answer.

"Why not?" Khirsah retorts, looking at Amanda then to Xenograg.

"Amanda is not allowed in Rhydin City save for Dojo Darelir," begins Xenograg. "She has been shown the location of certain buildings -- the Inn and I'Taurn, for two -- but only in case of emergency. I have too many enemies, and she is not prepared."

"I see. Someday, then," says Khirsah, with a smile to Amanda.

"Yes, someday," agrees Xenograg.

Amanda goes to bed early after her day of exertion. Alais, Khirsah, and Xenograg withdraw to a warm room and enjoy a drink or two. Conversation comes and goes; none of the three being uncomfortable in silence. Khirsah eventually departs, and Xenograg retires to his room around midnight.

Perhaps an hour after midnight, Amanda's sleep becomes disturbed. Her dream changes into something worse than a nightmare. A dream-vision comes to her, and she is forced to see an event through the eyes of another. As this man does, she sees bodyguards die fighting to protect him. She only sees; mercifully, there is no sound. The man now defends himself with a sword, but is disarmed and captured. A new man in armor enters the room, and Amanda is shocked as she recognizes him. She now realizes whose vision she shares, and her blood goes cold. She tries to cry out, but no sound comes; nor can she do anything to affect the scene.

The captured man is pushed to his knees, his arms held firmly by two warriors. The conquerer steps up and reaches towards his prey's unprotected head. Amanda moans as the golden crown is taken from "her" head. She sees words pass between the men, but does not hear them. The conquerer places the crown upon his own head, and Amanda panics. "Her" eyes are upon the conquerer's scabbard even before he reaches for his sword. The kneeling man struggles but it is futile. The conquerer places the sword edge against the left side of the fallen lord's neck. With some last words and a dark, snarling expression, the new ruler pulls the sword in a cutting motion forward.

Amanda screams, breaking out of the vision and sleep.

Alais enjoyed the company for dinner. Lately she'd dined alone, but tonight she had three to share the meal with, and she'd added the intriguing scents of Kalil flowers and Izlilix fruit. They were evocative of Nitesong, although neither Khirsah nor Amanda would recognize them, but Xenograg should. They scented the Sidhe air in summer, and perhaps it was nostalgia that convinced her to bring them here.

Once the problem was resolved, she decided she would bring some of these plants to Matlal, just in the garden. There was no reason to spread them around the entire island. The others may not find them as delightful as she did.

Amanda was clearly awed by the Elder, and Alais had to smile. Xenograg wanted an education and a widening of her horizons, this was certainly the place to do that and still maintain some bit of safety for the young sorceress.

Khirsah excused himself after the meal, and Xenograg and Amanda sat with their drinks as the darkness settled over the Isle, but the sound of water lapping against the black sand below them continued its lullaby.

She showed them both to their rooms before finding her own, where she stood on the balcony for a long time, simply staring out over the black water below. Alais tapped gently into the ley lines of her island, letting the ebb and flow of life and energy pass through her, not using it, simply experiencing it, getting comfortable with the signature there.

"Do you feel it Khirsah?" She knew he was long gone, but her whisper riffled into the night anyway.

Amanda's scream brings Alais and Xenograg running. Alais arrives first to find the girl crying and screaming madly.

"Traitor! Murderer! Assassin!"

Xenograg arrives and tries to hold Amanda to calm her, but she is inconsolable and continues to yell.

"Bastard! Damn him!"

"Amanda, what is wrong?" Xenograg asks in a strong voice, trying to get through to her.

"He is dead! My cousin is dead!" she cries. Xenograg's head snaps around towards Alais. He is clearly shocked.

"She has only one cousin," he says even though Alais knows this already. Xenograg looks back to Amanda. "How do you know this?"

"I saw it! I saw--" she begins but falls to hard sobbing. She hugs her father as if she would fall off the world otherwise.

"Is this true?" asks Alais.

"I will find out right now," growls Xenograg. He lowers his head as if to talk to himself. "Teraden, attend me," he half-whispers. Alais's eyes widen as the command is loosed--not at its power but its intensity and flavor. For the first time, she has witnessed Xenograg use necromancy. Alais can already feel the approach of the spirit, and looks into a shadowed corner of the bedroom as it materializes. Alais has never before met Teraden but recognizes him immediately from Xenograg's simple description from years past: a good and noble spirit. He is tall with blond hair. Though dead, he is armed and armored--residual self-image.

"Summoned, I come," Teraden says. He then bows to Alais. "Forgive my intrusion, mistress." Alais nods her acceptance and permission for him to remain. Xenograg looks to Teraden with a tight jaw.

"Is this vision true?"

"It is."

"Past or future?"

"Amanda saw it as it happened," Teraden says with a look of sympathy to Amanda. "Theograg is dead at the hands of your eldest son." Xenograg's face darkens in rage.

"I will burn the flesh from his bones--" he begins but is interrupted by Teraden.

"No, you will not."

"What?!" Xenograg snaps. He stands up, and Amanda falls forward in the bed where he was. She is still sobbing, but the tenor has changed from anger to pain.

"You are dead in Demodar, Xenograg," Teraden announces in a voice resonating with otherworldly authority. "You gave up your place to affect events there. You are forbidden to avenge Theograg or otherwise strike at Kenograg." Xenograg simply stares at Teraden, knowing this is a command of the gods but not believing it--and hating it. Teraden ignores Xenograg and steps forward to lay a hand upon Amanda's head. She looks up as if suddenly aware of the spirit's presence.

"I am sorry, Bannu," he says to her. "Your love for your cousin made for such a strong connection." Amanda begins to cry again, but it is no longer sobbing. Xenograg sits and takes his daughter in his arms again, rocking her.

Alais had only recently retired for the night when the scream of abject terror ripped through her home. It reverberated off the stone walls with the otherworldly power of sorcery.

She fairly flew out of her bed toward the source of the scream to find Amanda crying inconsolably yet screaming as though possessed.

As Xenograg arrives, she follows into the room, remaining silent to try to avoid upsetting the girl further, but she searched for traces of intrusion by magical means that could have caused this disaster. She found nothing out of place, and the ley lines remained unperturbed by sorcerous intruders. She watched as Xenograg tried to console his daughter.

"He is dead! My cousin is dead!" Amanda cried.

What happened next was something completely unexpected as Xenograg tapped into necromancy. Alais felt it as surely as a physical touch. Shock rippled through her at the familiarity yet disimilarity to her own. Teraden materialized on her lands, and without question, the warrior was quite dead. Had she not trusted Xeno implicitly, she would have instantly banished the dead warrior.

She listened to the exchange, and knew the pain Xenograg suffered. His son had slain the emperor, and Xenograg was not allowed to return to avenge the power of the throne.

In silence she watched Xenograg endeavor to console his daughter. "Xenograg, 's th' former wathu-Darelir, 'm Ah allowed tae r'turn tae Demodar?"
