Academy Culinary Workshop: Cooking with Leftover Candy Bars

Hello! I’m your instructor for the evening, Chef Candace Barr. Tonight is one of two cooking classes offering the chance to use up all that extra leftover Halloween candy. Tonight’s class will be focusing on candy bars. Nougat candy bars, caramel candy bars, peanut butter candy bars, whipped fluff candy bars… you name it and it can go into any of these recipes! Tomorrow's class will feature all the other types of leftover candy from hard candies to candy corn.

The two alternating classes will run in the evenings for about two weeks until Sunday, November 16th. If you still have leftover candy after that, you might as well stick it on your gingerbread houses. There is no age limit to students for these classes, but children twelve and under must be accompanied by an adult. Candy bars are cut, fruits are washed and sliced, dough is prepared, ingredients are measured, ovens are preheated, and all the other basic cooking preparation work is already complete, so all you have to do is cook.

I’m going to start out by telling you a little bit about each of our six featured recipes. Then, we’ll break up into small groups and you’ll move on to the cooking stations we have set up. Two students from the Academy of Bristle Crios’s Culinary Programs will be at each station to assist you in making the recipe. After about thirty minutes at each station, you’ll move around to the next station until you get the chance to make each dessert. I’ll be walking around and helping out as I go. At the end, we’ll have everything you made out for a dessert buffet. You can take home any leftovers. This is a leftover based class, after all.

Candy Bar Recipes

Just about everyone has heard of Deep Fried Candy Bars, but have you tried one yet? If you got spare candy bars laying around, you certainly have an excuse to make some. They may sound intimidating to most, but they couldn’t be simpler. Dip the candy bar in a mixture of flour, baking soda, and milk, and fry in a little oil. No need to break out a whole deep fryer either. You can fry these bad boys up in a skillet, and that’s exactly what you’ll be doing for this class. Experiment with a couple types of candy bars and see what works best.

Looking for a more health conscious option? How about Grilled Candy Bars? Grilling is supposed to be healthy, at least that’s what we’re choosing to go with here. These are so simple. Just place the candy bar and some marshmallow fluff in a tortilla, fold it up, and rub it with a little butter and sugar, then pop on the grill. You’ll be able to impress anyone with this simple idea.

We got fried and grilled, so how about baked? Candy Bar Croissants sounds as easy as it is. Take some crescent roll dough, rub with butter, plop down your candy bar, roll it up, brush the croissant with a bit of egg for a nice shine, and after a nice bake, you’re done. Why has no one thought of this before? You don’t even need to tell your friends what it is. Let them wonder in awe of what you used for a filling.

While we’ve got the oven on, let’s try some Candy Bar Brownies. You can really use any type of brownie recipe. For tonight, we’re going to be using a German Chocolate cake mix, sweetened condensed milk, and butter, in addition to mixing in our candy bar chunks. You may think it’s weird to use a cake mix for brownies, but I say you have to try it before you can judge. I say to make this better by throwing some candy bar chunks right on the top to have them melt in to the crust.

If we got some candy bar chunks cut up and ready, lets use them in some Candy Bar Pudding. Now granted, we could open a packet of instant pudding and throw some candy chunks in, but we’re still a cooking class and we’re going to do a little cooking. We’re going to make some pudding from scratch and toss in our candy bars. Now, you’re supposed to let it chill overnight, but I certainly can’t wait that long to try one of my desserts. Using the power of some of our mage students and the technology of some of our science students, we got two special coolers that should do the job in about fifteen minutes.

Now you’re going to call me a complete hypocrite because in the Candy Bar Apple Salad recipe, we’re going to use instant pudding to save time. This dessert simply calls for a mixture of milk, instant vanilla pudding, and cool whip to act as a salad dressing to coat some candy bar chunks and diced apples. It’s similar to an Ambrosia fruit salad, but the addition of chocolate always makes everything better.

So let’s get cooking!

Hello! I’m your instructor for the evening, Chef Candace Barr. Tonight is one of two cooking classes offering the chance to use up all that extra leftover Halloween candy. Hard candy, chewy candy, candy corn… you name it and we probably have a recipe for it! Tomorrow's class will feature recipes for leftover candy bars.

If you still have leftover candy after that, you might as well stick it on your gingerbread houses. There is no age limit to students for these classes, but children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The candy is unwrapped, fruits are washed and sliced, dough is prepared, ingredients are measured, ovens are preheated, and the other basic cooking preparation work is already complete, so all you have to do is cook.

Candy Recipes

This first recipe is so simple, you’ll wonder why you didn’t think of it. What is a better pairing for apples than cinnamon, and how in the world can anyone eat those red hot cinnamon candies? By breaking down apples and apple cider in a strong boil with the cinnamon candies, a little sugar, salt, and lemon juice, you will have yourself a perfect cinnamon flavored Rosy Red Applesauce. The red candy color definitely adds to this recipe.

While we’re breaking out the mason jars for our applesauce, why not make a few drinks of Jolly Rancher Lemonade? It’s as easy as it sounds. Two ingredients, lemonade and hard candies. Any kind or hard sugar based candy will do. Once you heat up the lemonade and dissolve the candies, you’re supposed to let it chill, but I certainly can’t wait that long to try one of these drinks and you shouldn’t have to either. Using the power of some of our mage students, and the technology of some of our science students, we got two special coolers that should do the job in just a couple minutes.

Since we are using hard candies, check out these gorgeous Stained Glass Sugar Cookies. This looks so elegant, no one will be able to tell how easy they were to make. We’ll be using ready sugar cookie dough to move the process along. The stained glass look is created by cutting out a shape into the center of the cookie and adding some crushed up hard candy. When it melts during baking, it will cool and harden like glass. How cool!

Now for something a little different. Those red licorice twists can get pretty boring after awhile. Best bet? Add chocolate! With our Chocolate Strawberry Licorice Bites all you have to do is dip the licorice into melted chocolate and add sprinkles. Forget chocolate dipped pretzels. More sugar! Chocolate dipped licorice sticks, yes!

Speaking of chocolate, we have a few more chocolate recipes. Chocolate Peanut Butter Treat Bars is a whole bunch of chocolate and peanut butter stuff made into marshmallow cereal bars. You can use any type of cereal to really amp this up. Monster Munch Popcorn Mix is a simple mix of candy corn, nuts, popcorn, and chocolate candies all coated with melted chocolate.

Now for even more candy corn recipes. A perfect way to throw in just about any type of melty candy is to throw it into Candy Corn Bark. You can throw in anything from cookies to dried fruit. But if you want the focus to be the candy corn, try the Candy Corn and Chocolate Chip Cookies. We’ll be making these chocolate chip based cookies from scratch and throwing in some candy corn to top them off.

My pride and joy recipe, ‘pride and joy’ not ‘almond joy’, is the Candy Corn on the Cob. We’ll be experimenting with different ‘cobs’ to hold the corn together. Melted chocolate, icing, egg-less raw cookie dough, and anything else we can try until we develop the perfect model of a sugary candy corn on the cob!

Let’s get crackin’!
